Is Ohio State's Offense Predictable?
Monday, October 27, 2008, 02:39 PM EST [General]
Posted Oct 27, 2008 Is Ohio State's offense too predictable? That's the question a lot of fans are asking after the 13-6 loss to Penn State. Jerry Rudzinski answers that question plus gives some other thoughts on the game in this version of the Captain's Corner. Don’t fall into the trap of saying the Penn State offense isn’t as good as advertised. That offense is in fact that good. Our defense was just that special though on Saturday. It took a short field and a pass interference call for the No. 3 team in the country to score on a 3rd & Goal at the 1... ...I was intrigued with a question after the game. Somebody asked me, “Is our offense predictable?” I just finished explaining how OSU’s opponents sell out against the feet of Beanie and Terrelle. Our strengths are Beanie rambling and Terrelle tucking/keeping. If you are a coordinator, you have to game-plan and brainwash players to stop those two things. Predictable though? No. An easily identified strength does not necessarily mean predictable... I'm not sure I agree with Jerry. It would appear to me that our play calling IS "predictable." There seems to me to be a script written and we rarely deviate from it. Granted, we do have a freshman at QB, but the playbook seems to have been greatly paired down. All too often the opposition appears to know exactly what's coming. With the exception of the MSU game, this has been the rule, even when Boeckmen was the starting QB. I think that they should have been looking at the Florida/Tebow example from 2 years ago of how the offense should be run. I think things have gotten stale/predicable. It would appear from my perspective that Coach T needs to shake up the coaching staff(especially on the offensive side of the ball and even some on the defensive side) after the season is over. Tags:

Bitter loss breeds a new set of goals

Ohio State still has shot at BCS bowl, including Rose Monday, October 27, 2008 3:17 AM THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
As Ohio State players struggle once again with lowering their sights a notch, the last thing
they need is an extra week to think about it.
But coming off the 13-6 loss to Penn State on Saturday night -- a defeat that probably ended hope for a Big Ten title -- the Buckeyes now have a week off, time that certainly could serve to deepen their disappointment. "After you don't get done what you'd like to get done, you'd sure like to get on that field again," coach Jim Tressel said. "But our guys will get back to work when the time is right, and they're a good bunch..." ...A 10-2 Ohio State team likely would end up in a Bowl Championship Series game -- the Rose Bowl, if Penn State plays for the national title. In each of the past two seasons, when the Rose Bowl lost Big Ten champion Ohio State to the BCS title game, it chose a second-place Big Ten school in its place (Michigan in 2007, Illinois in 2008). Should Penn State end up in the Rose, Ohio State could still possibly be an at-large BCS team. At worst, the Buckeyes would play in the Capital One Bowl against a Southeastern Conference foe... I would have no problem with "settling" for the Rose Bowl! That's one heck of a "consolation prize." I think I might even try to make travel plans to go should we get there. We need to get the job done though. We are at NW on Nov. 8, at Ill on Nov. 16 and then it's THE GAME at The Shoe on Nov. 22. This is easily doable but the guys need to stay focused on the task at hand. If the do, we will be Pasadena bound! Tags:
Impressive!

After threatening to bench self, Pryor buries Michigan StateBy Pat Forde EAST LANSING, Mich. -- After a couple of sluggish performances, Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor sought out his head coach Friday at the school's football complex. On the eve of his biggest collegiate start, on the road against No. 20 Michigan State, he didn't want what most freshmen would want in a time of doubt. He didn't want sympathy, stroking or a Lifesaver. Quite the opposite. Pryor's message to Jim Tressel: "If I don't take us down the field first drive, second drive, third drive, I need to be taken out..." This is coming from a 19 YEAR OLD!!! The kid is quite impressive!
