Don't look for 600 on Mother's Day
Ken Griffey Jr.'s 500th home run came on Father’s Day in 2004, but even though Griffey enters this Mother's Day weekend three homers shy of 600, don't look for him to hit the milestone home run on Sunday.
Last season Griffey hit his 570th career home run on Mother's Day, explaining he'd not gotten his mother a gift yet, so it was a cheap way out of buying her something. He gave her the special pink bat with her name on the barrel used for the three-run homer at Dodger Stadium.
"I already bought my gift," Griffey said Wednesday of Mother's Day 2008, so he won't be looking for the easy option of just hitting a home run or three on Sunday.
As he edges closer to the milestone, Griffey said his biggest concern is making sure his mother, father, wife and kids can be in the stands when he becomes just the sixth player to hit 600 home runs in a career, and the first to do it untainted since Hank Aaron joined the club when Griffey was just 2 years old.
Barry Bonds and Sammy Sosa both achieved the feat under the cloud of steroids, while it's general accepted that Griffey did it the right way.
"It's the only way I know how to do things," Griffey said following Wednesday's victory over the Cubs. "Growing up in this game, my dad wasn't a major superstar. He always talked about the little things and doing things right. That's why my goal is to go out there and do things right -- whatever happens, happens."
Griffey said he's unconcerned about hitting 600. Griffey had two hits on Wednesday, both singles. He hasn't homered in 12 game****ting No. 597 on April 23.
"I could care less," Griffey said. "I've got 600 singles. (Actually, he has 1,477 singles)
"It's not something I worry about. I worry about getting a win, that's more important than anything. If you go 4-for-4 and hit three home runs and you lose, you're not happy. If you hit three home runs and you win, you're really happy. Like (Wednesday), I've never see Joey (Votto) smile that much."
Votto hit three homers on Wednesday, and Griffey's smile was a big as Votto's in the postgame clubhouse, not because of his two singles, but because fo the victory.
"I've had more fun getting a hit and laughing at people running around. The last hit today, (first base coach Billy Hatcher) said, 'you going to take that?' I said, 'Yep.'" Griffey said. "A hit is a hit whether it's five feet or 500. The object of the game is to get on base and score runs, you can’t do that from the dugout."
Even though Griffey had none of the seven homers the Red**** Wednesday, his three home runs will come soon enough.
"You've got to let some people do some damage and have fun," Griffey joked. "It's fun to watch other people do it -- except when they’re on the other team."

Cyclones were down 2-0 then 3-0 in the third period... then it was 3-1 power play goal... 3 on 1 then aprox. a min later 3-2 then we tie it up...yes we be proud 3-3. then south carolina stingrays score for a 4 to 3 lead. then with about 1:03 on the clock the only team in Cincy who can ties it up 4-4 and the arena goes nuts. In overtime the Clones win it 5-4. God I love this team!
