    Thinking out loud 7.24

The Pine Tar Incident was 25 years ago today.

It's funny that one of the greatest players of all time is so remembered by one thing like George Brett and the pine tar.

About seven out of 10 times that it's brought up that I grew up a Royals fan and a huge George Brett fan, the first thing out of people's mouths is "pine tar."

No, not batting titles in three different decades, not the 1985 World Series, not the 1985 ALCS, not .390 in 1980, not the Gold Glove, not 3,000 hits, not one of the highest percentages in voting for the Hall of Fame in history, not homering off of Goose Gossage in the 1980 ALCS -- nope, it's an at-bat in July.

Of course, I saw an interview with George Brett once that said it was the best thing that ever happened to him. Why? Because he'd rather be known as the "pine tar guy" than the "hemorrhoids guy."

But, in the end, the American League ruled the rule was antiquated and the home run stood and the Royals won.

    * As for Bronson Arroyo's comments yesterday, if I'm a Reds fan or a teammate, I'm glad he feels that way.

If I'm Walt Jocketty, I like having Bronson Arroyo in my rotation next year -- he's pretty much solid for 11 wins, 200-plus innings. There are days he'll be Greg Maddux and days he'll be Mike Maddux -- but he's a really good fourth starter.

That said, if someone wants to overpay for Arroyo, let them.

    * I'm not sure how Houston Street would fit in here, but you can never have too much pitching, and it would show that the Reds are going to make a real push for 2009.

    * Here's a really good article from the Hardball Times about how free agent compensation works, using Adam Dunn as an example.

    * Cy Blanton is headed to Philadelphia.

    * So, how about that C.C. Sabathia? Wow. Four games, three complete games, four wins. Not too shabby.

That said, not sure if I were a Brewers fan I'd be plunking down $300 for that authentic Sabathia jersey at the team shop. The $20 jersey t-shirt -- sure.

    * One of my best friends, Marc Lancaster, is chronicling "a day in the life" of a beat writer as the Tampa Bay Rays head to Kansas City. Check it out through the day. I should have done that last year in the Atlanta 18-inning game, me headed to Athens to drink until 4, 8 a.m. flight to Miami, night game in Miami two days last season.

    * Eugene Clifford has been released from his scholarship by Ohio State -- if Alex Daniels has a place at UC, does Clifford?

    * UC grad Urban Meyer is still crying about UGA kicking Florida's butt last year.

Just for fun, here it is:

I do find it funny that Tim Tebow says it didn't get in their heads, but they will remember it.

But he'd rather be a good example for the kids than beat the Dogs. Well, I'm glad he feels that way. It's great. But I'm even more happy that Knowshon Moreno would laugh at that question and then eat a child to prove that nothing is more important than crushing the Gators.

    * SI has their writers writing about their favorite sports venues. I'll have to think about mine...

    * Darren Rovel looks at athletes' restaurants and how it's usually not a good business. There's a mention of Huggins' place that closed here, as well as Jeff Conine's place in South Florida and George Brett's in Kansas City.

On my very first trip to Cincinnati back in the mid-'70s, I went to Johnny Bench's Home Plate Restaurant. It was a pretty nice place but the food? Nah. We drank a lot. So it's funny now how often you see Bench memorabilia that includes items from the Home Plate.

I have been to George Brett's in KC and it was delicious.

The important question of the day is: Do you still have the 'stache?

To me David Weathers looks like Eugene Tackleberry from the Police Academy movies. I'm not sure what the name of the actor is...

What exactly is the purpose of pine tar? I can see the purpose of it around the handle to give you a better grip and all but what's the point of it going almost half way up the bat?
