Cracked Nuts -- College football 9.13

Sunday, September 14, 2008, 01:03 AM EST [College Football]

Does Beanie Wells play defense? Or tackle?

Yikes. USC looked every bit the No. 1 team in the country on Saturday, and OSU wasn't close. Not at all. They weren't one player away, they were several players away.

Right now USC and Oklahoma are the two best teams in the country and it's not close.

I guess Frostee Rucker was right about the score when he said he thought Carson Palmer gave the Buckeyes too much credit with 42-17.

    * With this loss, I just can't see Ohio State getting a title shot, even if they run the table. College football is more about perception than any other sport. And this is the third year in a row Ohio State has not just lost a big game, but gotten blown out. This one earlier, so theoretically they could move back up into one of the top two spots by December, but... I just don't see it. However, with college football, strange things can always happen. But don't expect to see Ohio State in the national championship game again this season -- I think a lot of people would look at any 1-loss conference champion over OSI, or even a two-loss SEC champ if things work out.

    * 3-2? Really? I've always wanted to cover a 3-2 game. Auburn's new offensive coordinator (another new one, it seems they have a new one every year) probably had his honeymoon cut short.

    * Mark Dantonio has just the kind of running back he was always looking for at UC.

    * How bad is the ACC? Duke is one of the teams helping the conference.

    * I still think the SEC is the best conference, but the Big XII isn't far behind. The ACC, Big East and Big 11 are.

    * My parents are from Missouri, so, well, I take the Show Me stance on Penn State. I'm just not going to be tricked by early blowouts of bad teams by them again -- and with Temple, Illinois and Purdue coming up, it may be a while before I'll know anything about 'em.

    * That said, I like Wisconsin. I write this while watching the Badgers and Fresno State. Fresno's good, but I think Wisconsin wins this one.

    * I have no idea what to think about BYU.

    * The Dawgs didn't look good -- but they won. Still think they drop two or three games this season. My man Knowshon's TD run was sick. And South Carolina's D is legit. That said, Willie Martinez -- cover the freakin' tight end!

    * How ugly are those Virginia Tech uniforms?

    Just say no to orange.

    * The Redhawks just avoided a really bad loss on Saturday. Even with a new QB, don't expect the Victory Bell to be on the move anytime soon.

    Damn Good Dawg

I'll still think of Uga VI as that puppy with a huge head that was just so energetic compared to Uga V, who was the mascot during my years at the University of Georgia.

That's why I was so surprised when I saw Uga VI had died. He was nearly 10, which is when my bulldog, Bucky, died, too. That's a long life in bulldog years, but I'll still think of him as that pup -- even though Uga VI was 20 pounds heavier than his dad.

Working at the Athens Banner-Herald and later at the Decatur (Ala.) Daily, I was able to get up close and personal with Uga several times. He was a damn good dawg. He'll be missed.

Services will be held Monday at Sanford Stadium.
