50/50 Chance Yonder remains a 'Cane

Friday, August 8, 2008, 01:09 PM EST [General]

Yonder Alonso speculated that there is a 50/50 chance that he will not sign with the Reds and play again for the Miami Hurricanes next season. While this could all be silly posturing in order to get more money from the Reds, it could also be the straight truth. How'd this look on top of another ugly, losing season? Adam Dunn---A Comparison With Other Top NL OFs

Tuesday, July 15, 2008, 11:02 PM EST [General]

So Adam Dunn sucks, yeah yeah we all know it. What I'm going to do here is compare him to the other top offensive OF's in the NL just to give you something to think about. Let's pit him against Holliday, Burrell, Bay, Fukodome, Nady, and Beltran.

First, let's look at OBP. 1 Holliday .421, 2. Burrell .404, 3. Bay .387, 4. Fukodome .383, 5. Dunn .380, 6. Nady .377, 7. Beltran .363. So Dunn compares favorable with 6 other OFs just about every fan would want on their team in the OBP category, nothing unexpected there.

Now let's look at RS. 1. Beltran 67, 2. Bay 64, 3. Fukodome 59, 4. Holliday 52, 5. Burrell 49, 6. Dunn 48, 7. Nady 43. Now this is the first time you start to see that it matters how the players around you perform. Beltran, last among these players in obp, 1st in RS. Holliday far and away first in opb, 4th in RS. Bay and Nady similar OBPs, but with Bay batting ahead of Nady many more RS for Bay.

Next up RBIs. 1. Beltran 66, 2. Dunn 59, 3. Burrell 57, 4. Nady 56, 5. Bay 53, 6. Holliday 51, 7. Fukodome 36. Wow, Dunn is 2nd among these great OFs in RBI, who would have guessed considering all the Dunn bashing that takes place. Ahead of guys like Burrell, who plays in a great offense, Bay and Nady, who have each other, and Holliday, who plays in Coors.

Now for XB hits. 1. Burrell 47, 2. Bay 43, 3. Beltran 41, 4. Dunn 38, 5. Holliday 37, 6. Nady 37, 7. Fukodome 26. Once again, Dunn comparing favorably in a category he can control. And more XBH than the infalliable and all-star Matt Holliday. Matt Holliday must save babies in his spare time.

    Now for OPS. 1. Burrell .979, 2. Holliday .975, 3. Dunn .918, 4. Bay .917, 5. Nady .901, 6. Beltran .839, 7. Fukodome .791. Eh, whatever, Dunn sucks, no analysis here.

Now for SO. 1. Nady 51, 2. Holliday 59, 3. Beltran 61, 4. Fukodome 70, 5. Bay 77, 6. Burrell 78, 7. Dunn 99. Oh there ya go, he strikes out a bunch. But somehow manages to keep pace with these other great players in meaningful categories. Must be luck.

Now one last stat for you. % of the time at least one runner is on base when these guys come up, lower % gets highest ranking. 1. Burrell 37%, 2. Dunn 38%, 3. Bay 43%, 4. Holliday 46%, 5. Nady 46%, 6. Fukodome 48%, 7. Beltran 51%. What does this mean? It means less runners for Dunn and Burrell to drive in, and a crap ton for Beltran and K**** to knock around. This means that it is likely that if Dunn and Burrell were put into Fukodome's and Beltran's places in their respective lineups, than their RBI totals would shoot up.

Now for fun lets add up all these rankings and average em out, and see where these players would rank in value using just these stats. 1. Burrell 2.71, 2. Holliday 3.43, 3. Bay 3.43, 4. Beltran 4, 5. Dunn 4.14, 6. Nady 4.86, 7. Fukodome 5.43.

So Holliday is highly sought after on the trade market, yet among these 7 great players averages out to be about one spot higher in each category than Dunn? Holliday's average score in these rankings 3.43, Dunn's 4.14. That would indicate to me that there isn't that big of a difference between these two players as people make it out to be, Dunn just gets his job done in a different way, and is still effective in doing so. Same for Burrell, guy doesn't have a contract next year, and is having just an amazing year. The Phils would be wise to lock him up. K****, on the other hand, has been a good player, but looks like he could just be riding on the coattails of a great Cub offense. The fact that people hate on Dunn despite the fact that he ranks favorably with many NL OFs in many important offensive categories makes it all the more difficult to understand the disdain for the Big Donkey.

    Kriv Dawg Gone!

Wednesday, April 23, 2008, 11:19 AM EST [General]

Wow talk about unexpected. The writing was on the wall with the hiring of Jocketty over the winter, but most of us that felt like Jocketty was hired to replace WK thought that Krivsky would have until at least the end of this year. And yes, it's now been announced that Jocketty will be Krivsky's replacement.

Krivsky's biggest flaw has to have been his poor contract history. C. Trent pointed this out last night on air, Bob Castellini must get tired of hearing eat Stanton's 3 mil, Castro's 1 mil, and maybe eventually Hatteberg's 1.85 mil, Valentines 1 mil, and Patterson's 3 million. Add in Arroyo's pending escalating salary, and Krivsky has been wasting enough money that it's definitely offset the positives, such as picking up Phillips, acquiring Hamilton and then using using him to get Volquez, and getting Arroyo for nothing.

I'd expect major roster changes in the coming week or two, Bray, Bruce, Ross, and Bailey are all guys I think will be coming up soon, with Hatteberg, Valentin, Hopper, and Fogg getting the boot.
