    Real Heroes

Colerain Township firefighters Capt. Robin Broxterman Brian Schira. May God bless their families and bring them healing. As a Colerain resident I am deeply appreciative of their sacrifice. I'm praying for their families and hope everyone who reads this does as well.

Why I have a problem with Patterson

Tuesday, April 1, 2008, 06:00 PM EST [General]

Ok, let me start off by apologizing for abandoning the fray after seconding the idea that Jay Bruce should have started in center rather than Cory Patterson.

You can blame it on "She."
[see the Rumpole series by John Mortimer for the origin of "She who must be obeyed] The boss came home and was hungry. And, as she was willing to cook and clean up, I was in no position to continue blogging. I consider myself fortunate that I was allowed to listen to the denouement (thanks, freerice) on the radio.

What really peeved me was Patterson's first at bat, the first of the season for the Reds, and the first crack at Brandon Webb with the home team already in a 1-0 hole. On a 3-1 count Patterson is swinging away.

If I'm being unduly critical, let me know.

But, I always thought leadoff batters were there to work the count, foul off a couple pitches, allow the guys on the bench to observe the pitcher, and maybe, get on base.

I can't imagine Bruce doing any worse at that first at bat than Patterson.

Bruce had a bad ST, there's no denying that. But, TNBT couldn't have done any worse that Paterson's 0'fer. And maybe, just maybe he would have been able to foul off a pitch or two. Maybe not, but it would have been nice to have see him try.
