Antwan Odom is so much better than Justin Smith

In yet another failed chapter in the history of Bengals Free Agency. How do they get it so wrong not once or twice, but everytime.

For all of the J Smith haters (LANCE) who thought that anything would be an upgrade how do you feel about this signing now?

We let a 3 down defender go for a 2 down defender. We let a guy who at least gave effort on every play go for a guy who stands straight up at the line on every play. We let a guy who has 28 tackels, 3 sacks, 1 int, and 1 pass defended go for a guy with 8 tackels, 1 forced fumble, and  1 pass defended.

I by no means think that Justin Smith is the reason that the Bangals are 0-5, but watching Odom play defense is like watching paint dry. He stands up straight on every play and is engaged and that is it. I have yet to see him trail a play or even give average effort on a series.

This is a perfect example of what the Bengals get in free agency, second or 3rd rate playes for roughly the same money as 1st rate players because no one that has any talent wants to waste it here!!!

While I agree Odom is mediocre at best. He is still 2/3 the price of J smith (6 yrs 45MM). Odoms was 5 year 29MM.

J Smith is decent in a 3-4 system, but he is by far not the answer for the bengals.

No you can debale we should have moved to a 3-4 3 years ago and drafted accordingly.... but that is a different point.

Odom is equal to j smith in 4-3 system, for less money. He is not good and either is smith. But he didnt play week 1 and has 1 sack in 4 games. not good, but above justim smiths numbers in his contract year

NFL contracts are not guaranteed!!! The difference is only $9 Million in guaranteed money and 1 year that J Smith will never see in 2013 for $9.5

BTW- we are not spending up to the salary cap so what the hell difference does it make???

easy, easy, they should've let Justin go 2 years ago instead of tagging him and went after Adalius Thomas...Justin is not worth the money he makes.

Now for the second week in a row, Odom finishes with 1 tackle so I feel your angst, but the answer was not to keep Justin and is not to bring him back. This is just another case of Mike Browns cheap **** not paying to expand his scouting dept. up to 2008 NFL level and the lack of a GM (who is not a family member and who knowsw something of NFL football) to orchestrate these type of decisions

While I am not saying that J Smith should have been kept, I am saying that if you are going to let him go at least bring in someone of equal or better talent. Odom is a joke when he is not surrounded by Pro Bowlers on each side of him.

The really sad thing is that the day he was signed everyone said the same thing. That he is not a every down player and he is not an anchor. Everyone also said that his numbers were inflated by playeiong on the D he played on. My questions is if everyone from the casual fan to the medai can pick up on this than why the hell can the Bengals not pick up on it???

You're right too, Odom sucks, 2 tackles in 2 weeks, that's it. But we agree Justin was not the answer, although he would have clearly out-performed Odom.
