Best attempt at a new NFL Overtime

Tuesday, November 18, 2008, 03:48 PM EST [General]

OK, so you hate quarter 5 and the posibility of a tie.  You think it's not fair when the first team gets the ball and runs down and scores before the opposing team runs an offensive play.  The problem is that the NFL likes the big exciting plays and doesn't want to start the teams at the 45.  Here's my best shot:

Coin flip winner picks Offense/Defense/Wind (probably D)

Defensive team kicks off from the goal line.

Receiving team returns it and runs offense under normal rules.

    No timeouts.

First half of OT is over after a score, turnover, or loss of downs.

After first overtime, you have to go for two.

Celebration penalty would be assessed to the end of the return.

Still have big play opportunity via kickoff return or 50 yard touchdown pass/run.  It's more "fair" than the current system.  Personally I'm OK with the current setup, ties throw a little chaos in the system.

    Bengalized or Browned?

Monday, October 13, 2008, 07:58 AM EST [General]

Why do we keep saying when someone on the professional(?) football team in this town has lost the will to win, they are Bengalized?  Just because they have been losing for a while does not mean we drag down the entire franchise and what was accomplished under the previous owner.  These coaches and players were not Bengalized.  They have been Browned.  Mike Browned to be more accurate.

Umpires: Hate 'em or HATE 'em

Sunday, July 20, 2008, 12:21 PM EST [General]

Baseball is great, it has been kept pretty consistent over the years, and the one aspect that is being questioned right now, Umpires.  Instant replay is definitely a must for the sport.  I don't know if umpires are worse now than in the past, but they are definitely more scrutinized.  With all the angles we have today, there is no reason to not get the call right.  I know the game runs long, and so I agree with the idea of having a group of umpires watching games in a central location every night.  When a call looks to be controversial, they call the crew in the other city and watch it make the judgment quickly and relay the ruling.  I would also go one step further, they need to get balls and strikes correct more often.  I'm not saying the review applies, but a couple of cameras can video each pitch of a game and be brought into a 3D program to show the actual path of the ball.  This could be used by the umpire to see how well they called the game, and see what calls they may have trouble with to improve in the job they do.  Umpires who consistently call pitches badly could be disciplined.

Why do I bring this up?  Adam Dunn has been the victim of several outside pitches called strikes this year.  He is forced to then swing at those pitches and usually bad things happen (see pinch hit with bases loaded, ball goes 10 feet; last night too.)  Unfortunately the public has the ability to see too much of the game now.  This forces the umpires to have to see everything from every angle so that we can enjoy the game.

Lastly the Umpires need to be held more accountable when throwing guys out of the game.  Edwin has been tossed twice now, and in both cases he should not have been thrown out.  Who ever said Umpires need scouting reports on players was 100% accurate.

    All-Star or All-Popular?

Monday, July 14, 2008, 12:45 PM EST [General]

    Dear Bud,

This game sucks.  I love baseball, and this game used to show the best players.  Now it's closer to the most marketed.  Let the players vote on who should be on the team about a month before the game.  Then with that list, let the fans vote for the starting lineup online.  That is the only way we can take the idiots out of the vote and you wouldn't end up with a player in the lineup who shouldn't be on the team.  If you are going to pin homefield advantage on the outcome, you need to make it a better game.

    Signed,

    All Baseball Fans
