About Me: I've got the best job going. I get paid to talk about the teams I grew up with in Cincinnati. I painted my face for the Freezer Bowl and watched Pete get hits 3,000 and 4,192 in person. As a kid I made calls to WLW Sports Talk to argue with Bob Trumpy. Cut from my HS team as a left handed shortstop I started broadcasting at my HS radio station.I graduated from Carmel High School in Carmel, Indiana in 1984 and Butler University in '88. My TV sports anchor career began at WSBT-TV in South Bend and took me to CLTV in Chicago. The highlight of my broadcast career was winning a Midwest Emmy for Chicago Bulls coverage. I left TV for radio at WMVP AM 1000 in Chicago.I came back home to Cincinnati in 1997. I live in Pleasantville (where sports and life are the way I wish they were). My wife Kelly was my intern in Chicago (insert own joke here). I have two children, Casey 8, and Peyton 5.

    • Jim Tressel’s record with the Buckeyes now is 79-17 (.823) and his career record is 214-74-2. Tressel’s 214 wins are tied for third-most among active FBS coaches with Virginia Tech’s Frank Beamer. The Hokies were idle this week.

    UC basketball news
CINCINNATI - University of Cincinnati center John Riek, who suffered a knee injury last summer prior to the NBA Draft, will join the Bearcats following the fall quarter in December, head coach Mick Cronin announced today.
Riek, who escaped the war-ravaged Sudan as a teenager, comes to Cincinnati after exploding onto the basketball scene last summer at the LeBron James Skills Academy where he was named the event's top underclassman by recruiting analysts.
Following the camp, Riek spent the 2007-08 season at the Winchendon School, where his stock rose and he entered his name into the NBA Draft. Considered a potential lottery pick, Riek was named the No. 1 high school center in the country by Rivals.com and at one point was considered the top player available for the draft by Fox Sports' Jeff Goodman.

    Guest/topic ideas
Among those we talked with this past week were:
Brian Kelly, Mick Cronin, Dave Lapham, David Fulcher, Jim Breech, Mark Curnutte, Jeff Piecoro, Michael Perry(Xavier book),  and Marc Lancaster (Rays writer)
This coming week we will talk with: Sean Miller, Charlie Coles and Tom Browning.....
Got a a topic or guest idea? Email me.
I hope to add college hoops to the conversation this week. The college football conversation hasn't taken off like I'd hoped. I get no traction from MLB playoff talk. The reality is there are more Bengals fans than fans of anything else going on right now.  But I struggle to keep Bengals talk interesting and more than just a rip fest.
I'll keep trying to keep things fresh, fun, give you variety and get you involved.

    Update on Mike from Fairfield
I stopped by to see Mike Thursday night. I got him some groceries and made sure he's going to be able to stay at the Motel for another week while he figures out what to do next.
He gave me a hug and had tears in his eyes. He was blown away by the support you guys have shown. Since 3pm Thursday there has been a steady stream of listeners stop by the Motel to offer help. When I arrived I saw Randall from Colerain. Hammy had stopped by earlier. Mike said it was the best day he's had in the last 3-4 weeks when all this began.
Friday I hope to have news on a 5th/3rd account for him if you would like to make a donation to help him get on his feet. You guys are the best! Thanks for answering the rally call.
I can't thank Mark Schlemmer of 980 WONE in Dayton enough for the heads up on Mike's situation. He helped me get the ball rolling on help for Mike.

    Jets a split personality
    Newark Star Ledger
The main culprit has been the Jets' secondary. The Chargers and Cardinals moved the ball with relative ease in their spread offenses -- four receivers and one running back out of the shotgun formation -- and the Jets had no answer. The Cardinals also used a no-huddle offense.
Underneath routes, crossing patterns and quick slants have been particularly effective against the Jets.

Rutgers has seen little of UC's QB
    Newark Star Ledger
"Brian's offense is a system. What we try to do is look at the system overall, how he's done it in our preparation for them," Schiano said. "Then you say, 'Where does (Anderson's) skill set fit in the system?' It's educated guessing. You take the one game you have and then project and look at his skill set in that game. They won pretty handily and he played well. So I'm sure whatever they did his package will expand a little bit. You try to predict what that expansion will be."

    Urgent...need your help
I've always considered my audience kind of an extended family.
You guys helped my family during Casey's battle with leukemia with your thoughts, prayers, well wishes, cards etc. I have learned of trouble for a loyal listener to the show....Mike in Fairfield. Mike has run into a bad family situation and is trying to get back on his feet.
Mike has lost his apartment and has been living in a Sharonville Motel for three weeks. He is out of money. He has no car. He has only two bags of clothes and belongings to his name. He will be evicted from the motel tomorrow at 11am when he can't pay for another week. He is expecting financial help by mail in the next week or two.
But he fears his next stop will be a homeless shelter tomorrow after 11am.
I talked to him this afternoon. He doesn't sound good. He needs help. He doesn't really want to ask for it. I've only met Mike once...during the trivia showdown with him and Hammy two years ago...but I consider him a friend.
Mike has called my show and others for years and has been a very loyal listener.
I am going to stop by and see him after the show. My family is going to take him some groceries and help with the Motel situation as best we can.
Consider this a rally cry. I hope to have more info soon on how you might be able to help.

Brooks said that Braxton Kelley, who has started the last two games at middle linebacker in Johnson’s place, will return to his role at weakside linebacker. Kelley’s move is timely, as weakside linebacker Michael Schwindel is expected to miss this week’s game because of an injured shoulder incurred at Alabama.
Brooks also noted that the other two players who are recovering from high-ankle sprains, defensive tackle Ricky Lumpkin and quarterback/wide receiver Randall Cobb, also appear ready for action on Saturday.

Trying to tune out the chronic complainers
    ESPN
There's nothing worse than sitting in the stands at a game and having to put up with ignorant experts. These are the people who don't know anything but insist on broadcasting their ignorance in a loud, abusive and often profane voice. Their motto: Never an unspoken thought.
    Diagnosing the various sports fans
    The Coach
I hate The Coach. He consistently ruins my live event experience. This is the guy who is constantly yelling at the players and coaches, telling them what to do because, obviously, the fan knows better than the paid professionals.

Jets should be wary of 0-5 (but feisty) Bengals
    NY Post
"Oh man, I watched them (Sunday) and any time you look at a team that played the Dallas Cowboys tough . . . every game they've had has been a tight one," wide receiver Laveranues Coles said. "They could just as well be 5-0 as they are 0-5. They're a scary team to play against whether they are 0-5 or 5-0. They are a very good football team."

Phillips addresses critcism of UK offense
    Lexington Herald Leader
"When we were having success, I didn't take it like I knew everything or I was the guru," Phillips said. "I understand that when things are not going well, I'm going to get the criticism. That's fine. That's what I signed up for. We're not doing well offensively, and I accept the criticism."

Upset of Rutgers began UC's momentum
    Josh Katzowitz, NY Times
The way Brian Kelly remembers that day in 2006, he was driving on a tollway in Chicago on a recruiting trip for the Central Michigan team he coached when he heard on the radio that Cincinnati had upset the new darling of college football, Rutgers.
He turned to his companion and said of the Cincinnati coach, "Mark Dantonio is going to get the Michigan State job now."

Pryor better learn how to pass the ball fast, or PSU is going to stomp the Bucks. They may do so any ways.

Purdue kept it close by selling out on the run. I'm sure every team from here on out will take note and make Pryor beat them with his arm. I'm not sure he's up to the task at this point. He can't hit a target in-motion and his downfield throws are of the Hail Mary variety. Poor mechanics, can't work in the pocket when he has to, can't throw accurately downfield.

Seems really over-hyped to me. Great athlete, but no refined or advanced QB skills for a #1 HS recruit. Bucks defense better be lights out the rest of the season.

    George,

One - Mike Brown will not IR Carson for the season if he doesn't have to or if it's not necessary (i.e. he will heal in a few weeks). It won't happen.

Two - I cannot see where shutting Palmer down in October until next August helps him, again if his elbow will be healthy by November. That's a long time doing nothing.

I don't know why people keep going back and forth on this now tired subject.
