    A tradition that has died
    CNNSI
In the graveyard of charming traditions baseball has outgrown, along with doubleheaders, daytime World Series games and pregame infield practice, the annual Hall of Fame Game in Cooperstown, NY, was interred last week. The Game was 68 years old. It died of the same natural causes that killed the doubleheader: The owners and players are making so much money that charm has been devalued to meaningless. With some appropriateness, the last scheduled Hall of Fame Game, between the Cubs and Padres last week, was rained out.

    Bengals season ticket waiting list
Are you on the waiting list? Have you bought season tickets?
I got this story from an emailer:
This individual made his $100 deposit and joined the list at the end of last season.
He received an e-mail from the Bengals shortly after, confirming receipt and stating about 4,900 people were in front of him on the waiting list. He recently got a call from the Bengals about purchasing season tickets. When he told the Bengals he was surprised he was called so soon, he was told that the waiting list was only 1,200 people.
What do you take that to mean?
Did a lot of fans give up their season tickets......and new owners purchase them?
Did fans give up their spot in line and forfeit their $100?

    Emailer Steven Sharp

"Did starting Valentín at third base turn out to be managerial genius? In the five-plus innings with him at third base last night, he wasn't involved in a single play. He was like a great cornerback just taking away an entire part of the field from the opposing quarterback."

    Thought of the night
Adam Dunn did not make a good throw to the plate in the 6th....unless airmailing the cutoff man is a good throw. I've often said David Ross has a bizarre issue with catching throws. Dunn's throw was a short hop on turf. Maybe you haven't seen the replay?

When Jackie Robinson was on the Hall of Fame ballot in 1962, he requested that the voters among the Baseball Writers Association of America judge him only as a player. He didn't want his social significance as the modern major leagues' first black player to be considered. Vote for him - or don't vote for him - on his merits as a player, as all the other Hall of Famers from Babe Ruth and Cy Young had been measured.

Chacon, who realizes he might not play again this season, admitted he lost his cool and threw Wade to the ground after Wade insisted he go to manager Cecil Cooper's office. The argument took place in the team's dining room, which Chacon refused to leave when asked to report to Cooper.

    Hairston on the way
    Louisville Courier Journal

Jerry Hairston Jr. started at center field and played four innings, going 1 for 3, before being whisked away to Toronto. Hairston ended his major league rehab assignment for a broken left thumb and will rejoin the Cincinnati Reds against the Blue Jays tonight.

    Momentum mounts in St Louis
    St Louis Post Dispatch
When John Mozeliak took over for the deposed Walt Jocketty last October, he inherited something of a mess: a tired, worn and aging ballclub that needed a transfusion after sputtering to the end of an era in 2007. Mozeliak had a plan. To shed old layers, stimulate energy and growth and clear the way for younger, rising talent. The strategy was endorsed by La Russa, who recognized the advantage of having a hungry, eager mix of players who must compete with each other for playing time.
