UC target changes mind
The Sporting News Today
East Cleveland (Ohio) Shaw DB Darwin Cook has changed his
mind. He has de-committed from Cincinnati and has pledged his services to West Virginia, The Plain Dealer of Cleveland reported. The 6-1, 180-pound safety reported scholarship offers from only thosetwo schools.
"I'm not changing my mindagain," Cook told the newspaper ."West Virginia is where I'm going;it's where I want to be. West Virginia plays a lot of defensive backsand blitzes a lot in its defensive schemes. ... Plus, there's also a possibility I'll play some slotback, too." Cook has 67 tackles this season, and 14.5 sacks. Last year he had 92 tackles and 22 sacks. Fort Scott (Kan.) Community

Royals GM has had enough
Kansas City Star
"That's it," he says. "We're at a point now where you will never, ever hear me say again that we have young players who are improving. You will never, ever hear me say again that we are rebuilding. That stuff is over. I'm sick of all that.
"We're not a young team anymore. We're not an improving team anymore. There are no more excuses. It's not like we made a lot of excuses before, but I'm sick of all that. It's time now."

Gillispie: Best conditioned team I've ever had
Lexington Herald Leader
Gillispie spoke at noon on a day that saw Kentucky conclude its "Boot Camp" conditioning program. Unlike some schools that begin conditioning as soon as the fall semester begins, the UK coach said he prefers to condense the work to a boot camp, which lasted eight days this year.

Screen might be solution to UK's slow starts
Lexington Herald Leader
The Wildcats have outscored their opponents 41-6 in the second quarter, 24-7 in the third and 58-5 in the fourth.
Now if they could only get that first quarter squared away. Kentucky has been painfully slow out of the box in the first five games, getting outscored 21-17 in the opening period.

Buckeyes still searching for identity
Columbus Dispatch
As Ohio State seeks a definitive offensive identity heading into the second half of the season, not even the callers yesterday to Jim Tressel's weekly radio show could agree on which mask the Buckeyes should wear.

Jets a split personality
Newark Star Ledger
The main culprit has been the Jets' secondary. The Chargers and Cardinals moved the ball with relative ease in their spread offenses -- four receivers and one running back out of the shotgun formation -- and the Jets had no answer. The Cardinals also used a no-huddle offense.
Underneath routes, crossing patterns and quick slants have been particularly effective against the Jets.

Rutgers has seen little of UC's QB
Newark Star Ledger
"Brian's offense is a system. What we try to do is look at the system overall, how he's done it in our preparation for them," Schiano said. "Then you say, 'Where does (Anderson's) skill set fit in the system?' It's educated guessing. You take the one game you have and then project and look at his skill set in that game. They won pretty handily and he played well. So I'm sure whatever they did his package will expand a little bit. You try to predict what that expansion will be."
