    A-10 news
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Atlantic 10 Conference and CBS Sports today announced a multi-year agreement for CBS to air the league’s men’s basketball championship final, beginning in 2010.
“We are extremely excited to partner with CBS Sports for our men’s basketball championship,” says A-10 commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade. “To have our champion crowned on the most exciting day of the college basketball season – Selection Sunday – speaks volumes to the respect that the Atlantic 10 has on a national level. Our student-athletes, coaches, and administrators will benefit greatly.”
"We are delighted to welcome the Atlantic 10 to the outstanding CBS Sports collection of championship games," says Mike Aresco, executive vice president, programming for CBS Sports. "The conference has a long tradition of excellence and now our viewers will be able to see the game that sends the winner to the NCAA Championship."
The Atlantic 10 also announced a new format for the men’s basketball championship to coincide with the 2010 title game being moved to Sunday on CBS Sports. The new format will continue to see the top 12 teams participate with seeds 1 through 4 receiving an opening round bye; however, the four opening round games will move to the campuses of the higher remaining seeded teams. Winners of each game will advance to the quarterfinals at a site scheduled to be announced later this winter for 2010 and beyond.

    Xavier news
Xavier University head basketball coach Sean Miller announced today that he has received a signed National Letter of Intent from 6-6, 200-pound guard/forward Kevin Parrom from South Kent (Conn.) Prep.
“Kevin Parrom is a versatile wing player that can play a number of different positions in our program,” said Miller. “With the impending departures of seniors C.J. Anderson and B.J. Raymond, finding this type of player was our top priority in the 2009 class. We are very excited about Kevin’s ability to contribute to our program on the basketball court. We are equally excited about his ability as a student and who he is as a person. He is a great fit into our University and our basketball program.”
Parrom’s coach at South Kent, Kelvin Jefferson, raved about Parrom’s work ethic and versatility. “I love his competitiveness and how hard he works,” said Jefferson. “His versatility sets him apart as a player. He handles the ball and shoots like a guard but he has the size to go inside and get a rebound or post up another player. When he grabs a rebound he also has the ability to start the break. He can do a lot of things well.”
“Kevin is a high character kid,” Jefferson continued. “He’s mature. He takes criticism, learns from it and works hard to get better.”
Jefferson said Parrom is on a deep team with 11 potential Division I players.
Parrom was listed very high by all of the recruiting services. He was the number 16 small forward (number 74 overall and a four-star recruit) by scout.com, the number 19 small forward (number 84 overall and a four-star recruit) by rivals.com and the number 20 small forward (number 83 overall) by ESPN.com.
“Xavier only signed one player in the fall but they struck gold with Kevin,” said Paul Biancardi, ESPN National Director of Recruiting for High School and College Basketball. “He will make an immediate impact and that’s quite a statement about Kevin because he is entering a high-level, top-notch college basketball program.”
“I just saw Kevin play again this past weekend,” Biancardi continued. “Kevin puts tremendous pressure on the defense with his driving ability. He has great body control when he gets to the rim and can adjust while in the air. He has improved his jump shot. Kevin plays the game with tremendous passion. He doesn’t take plays off. He has the potential to be an outstanding defender in the tough, gritty defense that Sean (Miller) likes to play. He is a high level player that brings a lot to the table.”
Prior to enrolling at South Kent Prep, Parrom averaged 14.5 ppg. as a junior at St. Raymond’s High School in the Bronx.

    Things I'm told
MLB sources tell me the White Sox and Reds have been involved in trade talks.
I'm told the White Sox initiated the talks. The potential deal involves the Sox sending RF Jermaine Dye to the Reds in exchange for Homer Bailey and another player.
    What do you think?
Dye is a right handed run producer that plays RF. He will be 35 in January.
He leads all AL OF in HR's since 2005 with 137.
He has a gun for an arm, but does not move well in the OF.
Money wise: Here is his contract situation.
    20009:$11.5M
    2010:$12M mutual option ($1M buyout)
He has a limited no trade clause
Homer is 22-years old and has thrown just 81.2 major league innings.

    UC football fans
There is now more UC football conversation and coverage than ever before.
Record breaking crowds are showing up. UC football is becoming Topic A most days on sports talk radio. So, where are the fans coming from?
Is UC growing their fan base? Are longtime fans simply becoming more involved?
I hear the debate of UC taking over the town from the Bengals.
Don't most Bengals fans follow a college football team already?
Are the Benglas fans walking away from supporting the team turning to UC?
Several months ago I did a poll question asking your favorite college football team. UC won, but with only 31% of the vote. This town is so college football divided.
That wouldn't be the case in Knoxville, Austin, Gainesville, Tuscaloosa or a town with a major college football program. Would the Vols, Longhorns, Gators and Tide grab just 31% of the vote in their city?
How much more of a market share can UC grab in this city?
Where will the new fans come from?
Were you a college fan without a favorite team that has now chosen to follow UC?
Are you simply ramping up your support of UC financially and emotionally?
Have you jumped on the UC bandwagon? If so, from where?

The Shield to end in all it's gritty glory tonight
After seven seasons, The Shield, (FX, 10pm) comes to an end tonight.
Created by Shawn Ryan, the show has pushed the envelope of police dramas like never before.
The show is based on an LA anti-gang unit called the "Strike Team".
Emmy winning Michael Chiklis (Vic Mackey) leads the team whose job is to take down the baddest of the bad. They use any means necessary.
Mackey and his guys are corrupt. His famous line is season one was
''Good cop and bad cop left for the day. I'm a different kind of cop.''
He don't cross the line, he erases it, or moves it wherever he needs it.
Mackey has planted drugs. He's coerced confessions. He killed a fellow cop.
Mackey is a thug....but loves his kids. He breaks the law...but takes drugs, rapists and bad guys off the streets.
You despise him, but at times find yourself rooting for him.
You shake your head at his actions. But you laugh at his actions.
What happens to Vic Mackey? How does it end for him?
Does he die? Get arrested? Does the deal with ICE fall apart? Does he ride off into the sunset?
    Have you watched the show?

Where does Michael Chiklis rank among the best TV Cop/Detectives all-time?
    Where does The Shield rank?
What is your favorite Cop show? Favorite character?

It was inserted in the upper left portion of my chest, near my shoulder...with the leads leading towards my heart. Dr. Sheldon Brownstein autographed the x-ray for me. He signed it "Alive and Kicking" because I had requested that song, by Simple Minds, as my musical choice in the operating room. Sadly, they didn't have it.

#16 ranking shows quality of XU start

Xavier was an unbalanced team before coming down here for the four-day tournament. Much of the Musketeers' success in their first two home games revolved around an experienced frontcourt that did most of the scoring but also committed most of the turnovers. Not only was Xavier's younger backcourt unproven, but there were questions about whether a point guard such as freshman Terrell Holloway would rise above playing merely as a role player at any point during the first couple months of the season.
