    Bengals news
Moved S Marvin White from the roster to the Reserve/Injured list. White, a second-year player from Texas Christian, suffered a knee injury in last week’s home game against Baltimore. White has played in all 12 games this season, with 10 starts, and leads the secondary with 81 tackles (second on the team). He also has had an interception and four total passes defensed. White’s move leaves the Bengals with 52 players on the active roster, one below the limit.
Signed DE Ben Ishola (pronounced “EE-sho-luh”) to the practice squad. Ishola (6-3, 255; Indiana) is classified a first-year NFL player. He opened 2008 with Indianapolis and played in four of the Colts’ five preseason games, with eight tackles, including one sack and two tackles-for-loss. He was waived by Indianapolis on Aug. 30. He entered the NFL in spring 2006 as a college free agent signee with Miami and was waived at the conclusion of preseason. A native of Germany, he spent 2007 with the Colts as an International Practice Squad Player.

    UK football news
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Freshman quarterback/wide receiver Randall Cobb had successful arthroscopic surgery on his left knee on Tuesday, Coach Rich Brooks has announced.
“This will take a little longer rehabilitation than some of the cartilage repairs we’ve had in the past,” Brooks said. “He won’t practice for two-to-three weeks. I wouldn’t rule him out, but he looks to be doubtful to play in the bowl game.”

    Names to know
    CNNSI

First, a look at the likely head coaching prospects, roughly grouped from the most popular to the long-shots on the list. Following that will be a fresh temperature reading of the league's coaching hot seats....
    Brian Kelly
-- Though the second-year University of Cincinnati head coach isn't thought to be quite ready for the NFL just yet, don't forget his name. You can bet the struggling Bengals won't, given that he's right under their nose. Kelly's a proven winner and after leading the lowly Bearcats to a Big East title, a 10-2 record, and a BCS Bowl (probably the Orange) this season. His name has surfaced in connection with head coaching jobs at Notre Dame, Washington and Tennessee. His lack of NFL experience hurts for now.
    Hot Seat Rankings
    10. Marvin Lewis, Cincinnati
-- If Lewis was coaching anywhere else, his team's 1-10-1 record this season would be a death sentence. But he's working for an owner in Mike Brown who holds his nose at the thought of paying off a coach to disappear. Brown, who still owes Lewis at least $8 million over the next two years, came out this week and praised Lewis for doing "an incredibly good job'' this season.

    Mike speaks: A massive disappointment
    Mark Curnutte, Enquirer

Brown terms the season a "massive disappointment. We feel it. We're unhappy down here. ... We're in the morass and just have to work through it."
Q: Are you going to essentially fire yourself and hire a general manager?
A: "I call them themes. They (fans and customers) like to talk about different themes when things don't go well. Part of being in this job, the good side of the coin is it shows the emotional connection the fans have with this football team."

    Brown praises Lewis
    Bengals.com
He indicated he has no plans to hire a general manager.
"The answer to the general manager problem is the same answer that we have to have for all these criticisms. We have to win. When we manage to do that, we won't hear so much about that kind of talk."
Lewis has two years left on his deal and despite the record Brown said, "In many ways he's done an incredibly good job. Our players still try hard and that's hard to come by when you go through all the losing this team has gone through."

    It is the Cincinnati Reds.

    Liggins supported for playing
    Lexington Herald Leader
"The easiest thing for him to do is not play on Saturday," the UK coach said. "... I'd say about 90 percent of the population would have too much pride (to play against West Virginia). By basically admitting a mistake by playing, that showed a great deal of toughness, a great deal of caring and a great deal of remorse.

Dusty wants to manage Wood again
    Chicago Tribune
"We have a closer already in [ Francisco] Cordero, who we have under contract for a few more years," Baker said Monday. "But somebody can use Kerry Wood. I am going to call him. I like Kerry Wood as a person, not just as a ballplayer, but as a person. I will give him a call and see what's up."
Cubs slam door on Wood era
    Chicago Sun Times
General manager Jim Hendry told Wood last month that the Cubs wouldn't compete with other teams on a multiyear, market-value contract that figured to be in the $10 million-per-year range, nor would they try to re-sign him for a comparable one-year deal, given payroll restraints and other priorities.

    D-Backs don't offer Dunn arbitration
    Arizona Republic
Dunn's case was difficult. Part of the team's justification for giving up the young players -- including big-league starter Micah Owings -- it did for Dunn was the expectation of two draft picks when Dunn departed as a free agent, but the downturn in the economy led the team to this decision, meaning Dunn will depart without any compensation.
