Former Red named manager of Legends
Lawless played at the major league level for eight seasons. He reached the majors with Cincinnati in 1982. On August 16, 1984, the Reds traded Lawless to the Montreal Expos for Pete Rose, who returned to the Reds as a player-manager and went on to set baseball's all-time record for career hits the following season.

Crawford denied
The NCAA has denied the waiver request filed on behalf of men’s basketball student-athlete Jordan Crawford to be immediately eligible to compete for Xavier after transferring from Indiana University. With this decision, Crawford will not be eligible to compete at Xavier until the 2009-10 basketball season.
“We’re disappointed in the decision, but greatly appreciate the efforts put forth by our staff and Jordan and his family throughout this process,” said Mike Bobinski, Xavier University Associate Vice President and Athletic Director. “Since his arrival on campus Jordan has been an important part of our basketball team and we look forward to his continued efforts and development as he prepares for next season.”

Edwin to LF? Reds haven't discussed, wouldn't be opposed
MLB.COM
"We haven't discussed it," Jocketty said. "We wouldn't be opposed to it. He's a good hitter and has a chance to improve. You'd want to keep his bat in the lineup. I still think he can be a good third baseman. Most of his errors are throwing, and it's a matter of improving his mechanics. If Edwin can end up an average defensive player and with his bat, you'd have a great player."

Why is everyone raining on my parade?

It's amazing
Yesterday I was struck by the choice fans made to be unhappy , cynical, bothered, even mad at the Brian Kelly news. Yesterday UC moved forward with stadium expansion, deciding to give you a better game experience with shorter lines for concessions and restrooms. UC is fast tracking an in-door practice facility, a structure the NFL team in town doesn't even have. UC will increase the football budget. Brian Kelly says he's excited and wants to stay.
The program got a full news cycle of positive news....locally and nationally.
It was an unlimited calls day for recruiting. And the reaction?
1. Yesterday was a dog and pony show
2. He's lying
3. He only said that because he knew Charlie Weis was coming back
4. Nothing has really changed
5. He'll leave next year for the ND job
6. One caller was mad Kelly didn't stick around and coach the Central Michigan bowl game two years ago.
7. Blah, blah, blah, blah
It's like the sun was shining on UC yesterday and people went looking for a cloud to stand under. What did you want to happen yesterday?
Should Brian have said, "I guess I'll stick around til something better comes along?"
Should UC have said, "We are going to wait on doing all this til we have a coach willing to accept a lifetime contract....with a provision for jail time if he breaks the contract?"
News Flash: Brian Kelly is here til he's not. UC is playing in a BCS bowl game. Enjoy.

USC and UCLA find color scheme that works
LA Times
For the first time in 26 years Saturday, both USC and UCLA will wear their home jerseys in the same game.
Carroll will be penalized one timeout at the start of the game for doing it. Neuheisel has agreed to immediately call a timeout to make it even. A brief pause for them, a historical procession for the rest of us.

Reds stuff
Dallas Morning News
We have some suggestions to keep Daniels away from the dice. Here are five guys worth talking to:
4. Walt Jocketty, GM Cincinnati: The Reds figure to be the other team that might have interest in Laird. The Rangers went back and forth on whether they'd do Laird-for-Homer Bailey last year. Bailey is injured right now, and his value is even lower. But they may not be able to find a pitcher with a higher ceiling in exchange for Laird.

Time, price may be right for Jr
Art Theil, Seattle PI
Despite the fact that there are several dozen variables at work this early in the offseason, not the least of which is Griffey's recovery from arthroscopic surgery on his left knee, I like it (also, a Griffey-to-Seattle column is a local tradition that goes back almost as far as Fremont's naked bicyclists, only is much more wholesome, and also postpones another woe-is-local-football topic).

Liggins situation just part of puzzle that is Bill G
John Clay, The Lexington Herald Leader
Who would have thought that the coach who had so many of his players fight through pain - perhaps you read where Derrick Jasper said his ailing knee was actually 40 to 50 percent last year - would call Liggins "courageous" for actually honoring Gillispie's request to enter the game on Saturday?

Things noticed
Auburn agreed to the game in Cincinnati so guard Quantez Robertson (Withrow) could play in his hometown. He made the request during his sophomore season. It will be the first time he's played a college game in town. He is expecting 50 members of his family to attend. (He's averaging 7.3 points and 5.8 rebounds per game). He played high school basketball vs Xavier's CJ Anderson (Winton Woods). Robertson is 7th all-time at Auburn for career assists with 440.

Congrats to Kevin McGuff
CINCINNATI - Xavier women's basketball opened the second half with a 17-2 run against the visiting Kentucky Wildcats on their way to a 67-44 win in non-conference play Tuesday night at Cintas Center. Senior Jerri Taylor led the Musketeers with 18 points as XU improves to 6-2 on the season while Kentucky falls to 4-2.
With the victory, head coach Kevin McGuff became the all-time winningest coach in Xavier history, eclipsing Melanie Balcomb (1995-06 through 2001-02). In his first six seasons, McGuff has led Xavier to a 135-61 record, a .689 winning percentage. The Musketeers have reached the postseason all six years of McGuff's tenure at Xavier.

On this date (December 3, 1998) in Cyclones history
From John Hamel, Cyclones
The heart and soul of the Cincinnati Cyclones, Don Biggs, was traded to Utah in exchange for Fred Knipscheer. It ended the tenure of the longest serving Cyclones player in history. It ended a run of 318 consecutive games played-not quite Ripken-like, but to play every night for four seasons is quite a feat given the physical nature he played the game. At the time the IHL folded (2000-01), Biggs held 17 team records.

Former Bearcat gets shot vs Bengals

Because Brackett is expected to miss Sunday's home game against Cincinnati -- and maybe more -- Hagler has another opportunity. It's not how he wanted it, but he'll take it. He lost his starting job when he tore a pectoral muscle in an offseason workout. He understands injuries are part of the game.

Miller keeps XU focus on bigger picture
USA Today
Well we're off to a unique start. What I mean by that is we were fortunate enough to win the San Juan Shootout against a very tough field and we're currently 6-0 and as I look back on the event, every one of those games that we won could have gone the other way. If we deserve credit in one area, it's that we've really done a great job winning the close games.
