Clones fall in OT FAIRBORN, Ohio - Dayton's Jim Henkemeyer scored 1:17 into overtime to give the Bombers a 5-4 overtime win over the Cincinnati Cyclones Saturday night at the Nutter Center. The win spoiled a comeback effort from the Cyclones in the final four minutes to force the extra stanza. The Cyclones got the first two goals of the game, as Thomas Beauregard netted his fourth of the season on the initial Cincinnati rush of the game just 20 seconds in. Beauregard came up the left wing side and slipped the puck past Mike Brown to open the scoring, as Matt Syroczynski and Stephen Werner added the assists. The lead extended to 2-0, as Werner picked up his first in a Cincinnati uniform at 8:10. Matt Macdonald and Beauregard added the assists on the score. In the third period, Dayton took its first lead of the night when Dan Riedel netted the tally at 13:47. The Cyclones evened things up when Olivier Latendresse got his first score of the season on a redirection off his body at 16:50 from Joe Grimaldi and Billy Irish-Baker to force overtime. Cincinnati outshot Dayton, 11-8, in the period. Dayton's Jim Henkemeyer ended the contest 1:17 into the extra frame, working a two-on-one with Ryan Smyth. His shot eluded Kyle Gajewski for the game winning goal. Dayton outshot Cincinnati, 48-21, for the game. The Cyclones are 0-1-1 on the season, while Dayton is 1-0. Cincinnati travels to Wheeling next Friday for a 7:30pm tilt and then returns to U.S. Bank Arena next Saturday for the home opener against Dayton at 7:30pm.

TBS is a joke You've got to be kidding me. One of the most anitcipated games of the season and TBS is experiencing technical difficulties for Game 6 of the ALCS? I flipped to the pregame at 7:45 and saw a frozen image of the field....no audio. Then TBS ran 15 minutes of promos and commercials. NO explanation offered on the screen. Then the show TV bloopers comes on for 15 mnutes. Game 6 starts. No coverage of it! NO explanation offered on the screen. Then the Steve Harvey show comes on. FINALLY at 8:25 a crawl appears on the screen explaining the difficulties. Guess they managed to wake somebody up in master control. That is what you get for including TBS in the deal. Nice TV contract MLB! Why not just hand the postseason coverage to a cable access station? UPDATE: 8:30....we have a game...missed the entire 1st inning and a BJ Upton HR. Way to go TBS....what a rinky dink operation.

Are you tailgating this weekend? If you are tailgating at a game this weekend send me some photos to post on the blog. Check out the story below...
''Five years ago, when Kevin went to Northwestern, I took a plain white van and converted it into a tailgate vehicle,'' said Mike Mims, a retired petroleum engineer who lives north of Houston. ''I went out to a Pick-a-Part place with a conversion van and took out the back seats and recovered it with customized vinyl. We put Northwestern logos all over it, and in the back we put the barbecue and the refrigerator and the heaters and the toolbox and microwave and big-screen TV and satellite and all that good stuff. We kept the van parked up in Chicago and had a great vehicle for tailgates after Northwestern games.'' But the Mimses had one problem: The vehicle was essentially useless for the non-football months. That set Kevin Mims, a mechanical engineering major, thinking. Check out the video Check out as it unfolds on the scene The company that builds them

Things read "The coaches have been pleasantly surprised by the play of ILB Takeo Spikes, a late-summer addition. The coaches expected Spikes, 31, to have lost a step from his glory days in Cincinnati and Buffalo. But what he lacks in quickness, Spikes makes up for in experience and instincts. Spikes already has three interceptions after going without one for three years. Spikes also has been valuable inside the locker room and has accepted Patrick Willis as the star of the linebackers."-The Sporting News Today

Bengals news The Bengals today made the following roster moves: * Signed TE Nate Lawrie from the Cincinnati practice squad. Lawrie (6-6, 255; Yale) is a fourth-year NFL player. He played in three Bengals games in 2007 (no receptions) and played in all four Bengals 2008 preseason games. He was released Aug. 30, spent a week on the Baltimore practice squad, and was signed to the Bengals practice squad on Sept. 11. * Signed CB Geoffrey Pope from the Cincinnati practice squad. Pope (6-0, 186; Howard) is classified a first-year player. He has played in one Bengals game this season (Game 3 at NY Giants) while spending five weeks on the practice squad. He spent the 2007 regular season on the Giants practice squad and was activated to the roster in postseason, playing in two games with one special teams tackle. * Placed S Herana-Daze Jones on the Reserve/Injured list. A third-year NFL player, Jones suffered a hamstring injury last week at the N.Y. Jets. He played in Games 1 and 5-6 this season, with five special teams tackles, missing Games 2-4 with a hamstring injury not related to last week's. He led the Bengals in special teams tackles in both 2006 and 2007. * Placed C Kyle Cook on the Reserve/Injured list. Cook is a first-year player from Michigan State. He has played in the last five games, primarily on special teams, but in the last two games he has re-aggravated a dislocated great toe that he sustained in warmups prior to Game 5 at Dallas. BENGALS PRACTICE SQUAD MOVE The Bengals today signed QB Jeff Rowe to the practice squad. Rowe is a second-year player from Nevada. He spent last season on the Bengals roster, inactive as the designated third QB. He was with Cincinnati in the 2008 preseason, passing 24-for-43 for 228 yards with no TDs and one INT, and he was waived on Aug. 30.

Carson update: Probably out next week as well C. Trent's blog The Bengals are expected to officially add Jeff Rowe to the roster later today. When asked about it following Friday's practice, Marvin Lewis said Rowe would be most important in practice, as not to wear out Ryan Fitzpatrick and Jordan Palmer because Carson Palmer would "probably" get next week off as well.

Greg Cook on Carson Bengals.com The Bengals may be trying to figure out whether to shut him down for the season, so it's significant that the man at the top, Bengals president Mike Brown, is a veteran of the Cook tragedy as the club's assistant general manager. "Mike has to be thinking that, not so much in relation to me," Cook said. "But you've got a franchise quarterback that they're paying so much money and the way it's going losing the first six games you're not going to go to the playoffs unless a miracle happens."

It's sad Listening to Cut Man this morning you hear the desperation/anger in the voice of fans. I heard suggestions for getting to Mike Brown that included burning tickets in a 55 gallon drum on Fountain Square and buying half the beer and food you normally buy at the games. What people fail to understand is that as long as the tailgating appeal, family/friend experience and PSL commitment outweighs bad football, nothing really matters. Mike might be dumb, but he 'aint stupid. He's able to worry about his customer once a year, season ticket renewal time. He knows the fans can't help themselves. People have talked about protests for 18-years....how has that worked out? The issues surrounding this team have been clear and debated for 18-years. And? Mike has proven he's not changing. At some point fans will realize change is up to them. This isn't brain surgery...heck Mike figured it out.

Steelers-Bengals...right way vs wrong way Ludwig At Large Winning is embedded in the Steelers, who won't stand for anything except excellence. Losing is ingrained in the fabric of the Bengals, whose only goal is being "competitive." In Pittsburgh, winning is expected. In Cincinnati, winning is a hassle. Bottom line ...The Steelers have a plan; Cincinnati doesn't have a clue.

I don't believe....what I just saw Incredible....Red Sox down 7-0 in the 7th inning....score 3 in the 7th and 4 in the 8th to tie it. They tied it on a base hit in a classic, nerve racking 10-pitch at-bat by Coco Crisp. Then with two outs in the bottom of the 9th, Rays 3B Evan Longoria threw the ball away for an error. JD Drew then ripped a double for the winner. Sox win 8-7. The second largest comeback in playoff history. One of the greatest games I've ever watched. Scott Kazmire was gutty! 6 innings, 2 hits, 0 runs....then handed it to the bullpen and they imploded...2,2, 9 hits, 8 runs. The Sox looked dead and Fenway was silent after three innings. By the 7th Fenway was up for grabs when Big Pappi hit the 3-run homer. It felt like the Red Sox were going to win. I still can't believe it. What a freakin' game. It was worth going to bed at 12:30. I was so wound up I hit my head on the book shelf in my office and have a nice gash in my head this morning. We'll see you Saturday night for a Game 6! Can the Rays recover? They looked devastated....but they are heading home. No offense to the Red Sox, and I love Sean Casey and Terry Francona....but it would be a baseball tragedy if the Rays don't win this series.

OSU news COLUMBUS, Ohio--Ohio State President E. Gordon Gee today announced the extension of Gene Smith’s contract as director of athletics through 2016. "Gene Smith is not only one of the country's finest collegiate athletics directors, but he is also one of its most dedicated academic leaders," Gee said. "All of us at Ohio State -- our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends -- are very fortunate to have his sound judgment and leadership." The contract extension formalizes Smith’s additional responsibilities as assistant vice president, broadening his role beyond athletics. In addition, Smith’s base salary was increased from $600,000 to $648,000. If certain athletic and academic benchmarks are met, his athletic incentive bonuses increase from $75,000 to $100,000 per year. Smith’s compensation is paid entirely through athletics department funds; no public funds are used. “I’m excited and honored to receive this extension. I’m committed to supporting President Gee and his vision for the institution. I look forward every day to supporting our student athletes and coaches. I’ve enjoyed experiences at many institutions but none like this. This is my final home. Sheila and I have put down roots in Columbus,” Smith said.

Delmon Young anyone? The St Paul Pioneer Press mentions the possibility of the Twins dealing Delmon Young. He's 23, plays LF...and hits right handed. Would you be interested? The Twins are looking for a bat with some pop....probably 3B. Young made 1.4 million this past season. Not many walks...some speed....hits lefties better (.300 in '08). Missle for an arm, one of the best in the game.....but did make 8 errors last year. Can play LF or RF...has played some CF. Big and strong.... 6'3 205....compared to Albert Belle. Did get suspended 50-games in the minors for throwing his bat at the umpire.

1999: Mike: This isn't your father's NFL anymore Enquirer "What's left to change?" said NFL draft analyst and former Cincinnatian Jerry Jones, publisher of the Drugstore List. "If there are no changes, and they continue to lose and play poorly, it falls in Mike's lap. If there were a GM or a coach or whoever who had total football control, it would fall in his lap."
****
What the fans were saying in '99 Enquirer "We've done our part. We agreed to the sales tax. Now give us something back. I really hope (Mike Brown) will put a little bit back into it as far as paying for players. He's trying to make as much as he can." "I wish there was a light at the end of the tunnel, but I don't see it. Every year for the past four years it gets tougher and tougher to come down here. It has to be because of Mike Brown. All of the mistakes he's made.... Unless he steps back and says, "My way is not working,' nothing's going to change."
****
A look at the franchise from '99 Enquirer The Bengals end the 1990s with the decade's worst record: 52 wins and 106 losses. They have won 60 fewer games and spent $90 million less on talent than the decade's top team, the San Francisco 49ers. Former Bengals see the roots of the team's dismal decade in the team's historic frugality. "Absolutely," said Reggie Williams, former team captain who played for the Bengals from 1976 to 1989. "To have stewardship of this institution and have run it into the ground, for whatever reason, is unconscionable." But Mike Brown, who now controls a majority of the team's stock, said it's "dead**** wrong" to think the money paid to shareholders would have improved the Bengals' performance had it been invested in the team. Another complaint: the team's lean scouting staff, among the smallest in the league. "Other teams' coaches were studying football and doing football things - playbooks and training reels and studying what other teams were doing. We were on the road, as soon as the season ended," Mr. Wyche said.

Hype outpacing Pryor's performance Pittsburgh Post Gazette The Buckeyes could manage only 222 yards of offense. Pryor threw for just 97 yards and was sacked three times, and his signature running game, the trait that made him the most sought-after player in the country, was stuck in neutral. The wunderkind who was showered with praise only a week earlier described his performance after this game as "terrible."

Coaches' shows and remotes Maybe it's just the radio geek in me that makes me wonder, but why do listeners call sports talk radio with comments and questions...but hardly ever call a rcoaches show or remote broadcats? I'm always curious about the number/lack of calls to coaches shows. I would think it's the perfect forum and only chance for fans to actually ask Brian Kelly, Mick Cronin and Sean Miller a question about the team and their coaching decisions. Same goes for my Friday show or Bengals Line on Monday. I have David Fulcher and a writer who covers the team every Friday...rarely do we get calls. Doc and Lap have guests....rarely do they get calls. Is it the show content? Is it the fact you don't think calls are taken for these type of shows? Do you simply enjoy listening? Always been curious. Email me your thoughts.

**** The Mayor's comments Let me get this straight.....it's on us to support the Bengals? Well, when is sombody going to put this where it belongs....on the Bengals and Mike Brown? Mayor Mallory told reporters yesterday, "It is very important that we continue to support the Bengals, even when they are having tough times," he said. "They need our support more than ever." Would this be the team that is 0-6 and has one winning season in the last 18 years? Doesn't the mayor have this backwards? Isn't it important for the Bengals to change the way they operate and start running a more successful organization? Isn't it important for Mayor Mallory to worry about bigger issues in the city and stop positioning himself for a job next to Bob Bedinghaus when his term is mayor is up? How the hell long has Mayor Mallory been a fan? What times has he suffered thru with the Bengals? Marvin says he's hasn't been around for all 18 years....and he's only responsible for the time he's been here....exactly the point! He hasn't suffered through what fans have. It's all bullcrap. I'm tired of it. Spare us the advice on how we should conduct ourselves as fans. Why is it always on us? When do the fans get something out of this? Did the fans decide to go without a GM, hire only a handful of scouts, release Willie Anderson, bring back Chris Henry and refuse to think outside the box? Marvin says be patient, if you are a fan be a fan, cheer louder for the Cleveland game, don't be a frontrunner. Mike talks once a year....and then says that Massilon's in-door facility is cutting edge and ahead of his team...and consistent with his dad's belief that Massilon should be cutting edge. When does it stop? The fans pay for a stadium, sellout 44 straight games and get what? Hosed, extorted by a PSL, left to find something else to do on Sunday's, but told we need to support the team. The same franchise that is 114-195 since 1990. Am I the only one that thinks this is insane? Aren't you tired of being told what you need to do for this franchise? Isn't it time for fans to tell Mike Brown something..... like take a flying leap?

I get the biggest kick out of it I hear people talk about the 91-0 and 96-0 high school football games and say......"hey, suck it up....be a man...it's a life lesson....there are no mercy rules in life" Gotta love the neanderthal mentality. All that is missing when they say it is the grunting and flexing of their muscles. Yep, sure is value in a 96-0 football game. Nothing wrong with overturning fumbles in the endzone for TD's, and instead placing the ball at the one yard line. Then watching the offense take a knee four straight times and hand it over to the other team. That's the spirit. That's sports. That's competition. If that is a real life lesson, then what exaclty is the lesson learned facing a 90 point deficit that is different than a 50, 60, 70 point deficit? Give me a break. Who wants to watch that? coach that? play in that?

Draft record of Steelers GM holds up well Pittsburgh Post Gazette Here are the first-rounders selected in Colbert's era: Plaxico Burress, Casey Hampton, Kendall Simmons, Troy Polamalu, Ben Roethlisberger, Heath Miller, Santonio Holmes, Lawrence Timmons and Rashard Mendenhall. Burress, Hampton, Polamalu and Roethlisberger are Pro Bowl players and among the elite of the game. Simmons, Miller and Holmes are solid starters. Holmes, who led the league in yards per catch last season, figures to be a Pro Bowl player in the near future. Timmons, although still not starting, is a major contributor and another probable Pro Bowl performer. It's too early to make a judgment on Mendenhall.
