Montgomery resigns as Miami coach OXFORD, Ohio-Miami University's Director of Athletics BRAD BATES announced today that SHANE MONTGOMERY has resigned from his position as head football coach of the RedHawks. "Shane Montgomery is an extraordinary person who has contributed to our department, university and community in exceptional ways," said Bates. "Ultimately, however, our responsibility to Miami University is to maximize our students' development, and we believe that winning championships facilitates student growth and development in substantial and meaningful ways. Our competitive success in the past few years has not reflected the lofty standards of excellence we expect. "Our search process will begin immediately and move swiftly yet deliberately. We must hire the perfect fit for our current context, goals and aspirations." Miami University President DAVID HODGE supported the decision, saying "Shane Montgomery has been a very positive member of the Miami Family and has been an exceptional role model for his players, both on and off the field. Unfortunately, the football team has not achieved the level of success that we expect at Miami, and Brad Bates believes that the program needs a new direction. We wish the very best for Shane, Sandy and their family." The 2008 season was Montgomery's fourth as the head coach of the RedHawks. Miami had a 2-10 record this past season and compiled a cumulative record of 17-31 through four seasons under Montgomery's direction. Montgomery's best season came in his first year as head coach (2005) when he led the Red and White to a 7-4 overall record and a share of the Mid-American Conference's East Division title. In 2007, he again directed Miami to a share of the MAC East championship. The RedHawks were defeated by Central Michigan in the league's championship game. Since 2005, Montgomery's four-year record in MAC play was 13-18. Montgomery initially joined Miami as its offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2001 under then-head coach Terry Hoeppner. He was instrumental in the development of RedHawk quarterbacks Ben Roethlisberger and Josh Betts.

Heard it from Hoard GoBearcats.com "Cincinnati is much further along than Virginia Tech was when I started," Roth told me. "The facilities they've built, and the commitment they've made is great, and they're in the BIG EAST and that's what got Virginia Tech going. If you look at 1989, there was absolutely no difference between Virginia Tech and Cincinnati. But the BIG EAST gave Virginia Tech television, it gave them the opportunity to go to bowl games, and as a result it gave the coaching staff a great vehicle to recruit. They were able to say, 'If you come to Virginia Tech, you're going to be able to go to great bowl games, and you're going to get on television,' and that wasn't the case before the BIG EAST."

Things noticed "House" was outstanding this week with Emmy winner Zeljko Ivanek (Damages) playing a gun wielding patient that takes hostages while searching for a diagnosis. But did you notice who played the SWAT team commander? Wood Harris (Avon Barksdale from The Wire). PS...He wasn't very convincing. But more than that...how hot is Olivia Wilde!?

The Shield: So, what did you think? STOP: SPOILER ALERT IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT....
Last night was the final episode after seven seaons of The Shield (FX). I thought it was very good.....better the more I thought about it. It had several "Holy ----" moments. What did you think of the end for Vic Mackey? I thought creator Shawn Ryan did as good a job as possible with him. Vic couldn't walk free and clear and he couldn't die. So? The cop that ran/controlled "the game" for seven years, is forced to play someone else's game. His life was put in a box....a desk job, in a coat and tie, his family (requested witness protection from him) reduced to pictures on his desk, and he screwed his last friend. What a scene when the lights and AC went off at 6pm and he was left in the dark before grabbing his gun and leaving. Other WOW moments: *Shane's pay phone moment with Vic when he leared Vic had cut a deal. Loved Vic's "Annie Oakley" reference. *Shane's suicide in the bathroom....followed by the scene of his son and wife on the bed, arms folded...with flowers and the toy police car. I admit I sat up and shouted "Oh ----". *The outrage from Ronnie after realizing Vic had screwed him *Vic's expression as Claudette read Shane's statement and showed him the pictures of Shane....and Vic's look up to the video camera. *The "vote for me, I'll set you free" storyline with the candidate for mayor was a waste of time.....as was the rookie detective and her cake. *I wish they'd done more to wrap the serial killer son/mom story. *I thought Claudette might snap and shoot Mackey at one point. *How about the snake biting the drug dealer after Mackey shoved his head thru the glass?! Dang....I'll miss that show Creator Shawn Ryan Q/A about the final episode Top 4 Cop shows all-time The Wire The Shield Hill Street Blues NYPD Blue

IU has suffered plenty from Sampson scandal Mike DeCourcy, The Sporting News There was no hiding the damage done to one of the college game's proudest programs. For the Hoosiers to fall by 26 in the Maui Invitational loser's bracket is a profound warning to potential scoundrels about what can become of your program and your career if you are perceived to have colored outside the NCAA's lines.
"Sampson error" over at IU Bob Kravitz, Indy Star The rebuilding has just started -- witness the second straight Indiana University basketball beat-down in Hawaii -- but the tearing down, the self-flagellation, the self-recrimination stemming from the mind-boggling hire of serial cheat Kelvin Sampson and his band of rogues, that's over for IU's once-spotless basketball program.

Doc: Kelly will stick with UC...for now Enquirer I think Kelly stays at UC, for now. His confidence keeps him here. I think he knows jobs open all the time. I think he knows he's a good coach whose name won't disappear. He'll get the job he really wants, someday. Meantime, I think he knows he has it good at UC, with a salary that probably will approach $1.5 million this year and a city ready to crown him.

A-10 news PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Atlantic 10 Conference and CBS Sports today announced a multi-year agreement for CBS to air the league’s men’s basketball championship final, beginning in 2010. “We are extremely excited to partner with CBS Sports for our men’s basketball championship,” says A-10 commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade. “To have our champion crowned on the most exciting day of the college basketball season – Selection Sunday – speaks volumes to the respect that the Atlantic 10 has on a national level. Our student-athletes, coaches, and administrators will benefit greatly.” "We are delighted to welcome the Atlantic 10 to the outstanding CBS Sports collection of championship games," says Mike Aresco, executive vice president, programming for CBS Sports. "The conference has a long tradition of excellence and now our viewers will be able to see the game that sends the winner to the NCAA Championship." The Atlantic 10 also announced a new format for the men’s basketball championship to coincide with the 2010 title game being moved to Sunday on CBS Sports. The new format will continue to see the top 12 teams participate with seeds 1 through 4 receiving an opening round bye; however, the four opening round games will move to the campuses of the higher remaining seeded teams. Winners of each game will advance to the quarterfinals at a site scheduled to be announced later this winter for 2010 and beyond.
Xavier news Xavier University head basketball coach Sean Miller announced today that he has received a signed National Letter of Intent from 6-6, 200-pound guard/forward Kevin Parrom from South Kent (Conn.) Prep. “Kevin Parrom is a versatile wing player that can play a number of different positions in our program,” said Miller. “With the impending departures of seniors C.J. Anderson and B.J. Raymond, finding this type of player was our top priority in the 2009 class. We are very excited about Kevin’s ability to contribute to our program on the basketball court. We are equally excited about his ability as a student and who he is as a person. He is a great fit into our University and our basketball program.” Parrom’s coach at South Kent, Kelvin Jefferson, raved about Parrom’s work ethic and versatility. “I love his competitiveness and how hard he works,” said Jefferson. “His versatility sets him apart as a player. He handles the ball and shoots like a guard but he has the size to go inside and get a rebound or post up another player. When he grabs a rebound he also has the ability to start the break. He can do a lot of things well.” “Kevin is a high character kid,” Jefferson continued. “He’s mature. He takes criticism, learns from it and works hard to get better.” Jefferson said Parrom is on a deep team with 11 potential Division I players. Parrom was listed very high by all of the recruiting services. He was the number 16 small forward (number 74 overall and a four-star recruit) by scout.com, the number 19 small forward (number 84 overall and a four-star recruit) by rivals.com and the number 20 small forward (number 83 overall) by ESPN.com. “Xavier only signed one player in the fall but they struck gold with Kevin,” said Paul Biancardi, ESPN National Director of Recruiting for High School and College Basketball. “He will make an immediate impact and that’s quite a statement about Kevin because he is entering a high-level, top-notch college basketball program.” “I just saw Kevin play again this past weekend,” Biancardi continued. “Kevin puts tremendous pressure on the defense with his driving ability. He has great body control when he gets to the rim and can adjust while in the air. He has improved his jump shot. Kevin plays the game with tremendous passion. He doesn’t take plays off. He has the potential to be an outstanding defender in the tough, gritty defense that Sean (Miller) likes to play. He is a high level player that brings a lot to the table.” Prior to enrolling at South Kent Prep, Parrom averaged 14.5 ppg. as a junior at St. Raymond’s High School in the Bronx.

UC football fans There is now more UC football conversation and coverage than ever before. Record breaking crowds are showing up. UC football is becoming Topic A most days on sports talk radio. So, where are the fans coming from? Is UC growing their fan base? Are longtime fans simply becoming more involved? I hear the debate of UC taking over the town from the Bengals. Don't most Bengals fans follow a college football team already? Are the Benglas fans walking away from supporting the team turning to UC? Several months ago I did a poll question asking your favorite college football team. UC won, but with only 31% of the vote. This town is so college football divided. That wouldn't be the case in Knoxville, Austin, Gainesville, Tuscaloosa or a town with a major college football program. Would the Vols, Longhorns, Gators and Tide grab just 31% of the vote in their city? How much more of a market share can UC grab in this city? Where will the new fans come from? Were you a college fan without a favorite team that has now chosen to follow UC? Are you simply ramping up your support of UC financially and emotionally? Have you jumped on the UC bandwagon? If so, from where?

The Shield to end in all it's gritty glory tonight After seven seasons, The Shield, (FX, 10pm) comes to an end tonight. Created by Shawn Ryan, the show has pushed the envelope of police dramas like never before. The show is based on an LA anti-gang unit called the "Strike Team". Emmy winning Michael Chiklis (Vic Mackey) leads the team whose job is to take down the baddest of the bad. They use any means necessary. Mackey and his guys are corrupt. His famous line is season one was ''Good cop and bad cop left for the day. I'm a different kind of cop.'' He don't cross the line, he erases it, or moves it wherever he needs it. Mackey has planted drugs. He's coerced confessions. He killed a fellow cop. Mackey is a thug....but loves his kids. He breaks the law...but takes drugs, rapists and bad guys off the streets. You despise him, but at times find yourself rooting for him. You shake your head at his actions. But you laugh at his actions. What happens to Vic Mackey? How does it end for him? Does he die? Get arrested? Does the deal with ICE fall apart? Does he ride off into the sunset? Have you watched the show?
Where does Michael Chiklis rank among the best TV Cop/Detectives all-time? Where does The Shield rank? What is your favorite Cop show? Favorite character?

#16 ranking shows quality of XU start Enquirer Xavier was an unbalanced team before coming down here for the four-day tournament. Much of the Musketeers' success in their first two home games revolved around an experienced frontcourt that did most of the scoring but also committed most of the turnovers. Not only was Xavier's younger backcourt unproven, but there were questions about whether a point guard such as freshman Terrell Holloway would rise above playing merely as a role player at any point during the first couple months of the season.
