    UC 2008 Recruiting class breakdown...(1/20/08)

Wednesday, April 2, 2008, 01:13 AM EST [General]

As I reported a few days ago, DJ Woods was considering UC and Michigan, and even after his visit to Ann Arbor this past weekend, as many of you already know, he has chosen UC...I couldn't be happier for him...

D.J. is UCs highest ranked player coming out of high school since at least 2002 and quite possibly 10-15yrs...Other players like Lenix, Chazz Anderson and Woodard were close, but knowone beats out Woods. A "3 star" recruit means a lot more than just the amount of stars. There are high end and low end 1-5 star recruits. I will be the 1st to tell you that the amount of stars has NO factor on how they will play, but since we are talking recruiting and rankings it is interesting to see what UC now has in their hands...

DJ had offers on the table to play at the following schools along with UC- Michigan, Auburn, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, Penn St. and W. Virginia...

As of today UC has 23 verbals for 2008...

1 QB- Brendon Kay- Good size QB from Michigan, not fast, had very few offers and I think his next best to UC was EMU...Doubt he will get a shot to play much but you never know...

3 RB- Jared Rains, Darrin Williams, George Winn- All 3 with speed and none of them weighing over 180lbs...Darrin is the most loved of the 3 but with size that may play a factor. Darrin is only 5'6" and weighs under 160lbs.!

4 WR- DJ Woods, Danny Milligan, Lynell Payne, Nick Truesdell- Woods is the creap of the crop, Milligan is an undersized local kid, and Nick is a 6'7" kid that I believe will convert to TE eventually...

2 OL- Evan Davis, Sean Hooey- Neither of these kids currently weigh over 260 lbs., Neither were highly recruited, Davis is a Colerain kid, Hooey from Michigan...

3 DE- Dan Girodano, Patrick Omameh, Walter Stewart- I don't have much info. on these kids and none of them really stand out. UC is only Big Conference school to offer to any of the 3 of these guys...

2 DT- Brandon Mills, Derek Wolfe- Mills is a Colerain kid, and neither of them had any other offers to a BCS school...

1 LB- J.K. Schaffer- Don't have much on this kid. Only other offer of mention is Ohio U.

6 DB- Dominique Battle, Cammerron Cheatham, Bruce Horner, Quincy Quetant, Ike Iloegbu, Patrick Lambert- Battle is the clear cut star of this group. Battle, hailing from Florida, also has offers from Colorado St., Indiana, Purdue, Syracuse and Army. Rivals ranks Battle as the #57 DB in the country. Nice DB class, 4 of the 5 are at least 6' or taller. Ike hails from Harmony Prep and also played RB as well as QB...

1 Unknown?- Travis Kelce- 6'5" 230 QB from Cleveland who WILL play both football and bball for UC next year. Football Scholarship. Picked UC over Uconn and Pitt. Not sure where he will fit in. QB, TE, DE? Who knows...

My TOP 5 for 2008 are...

5.) Ike Iloegbu - Interested to see how Kelly uses him. Can also play QB and RB

4.) Travis Kelce ?- Could play a variety of positions, and will be playing for Cronin as a legit bball player

3.) Dominique Battle DB- Best DB in this class for UC

2.) Darrin Williams RB- Very fast, very small, NOT afraid to go up the middle, tough little guy at 5'6" 156lbs.

1.) DJ Woods WR- Welcome to the new era of UC recruiting young man. Will be able to start for most NCAA schools at WR in 2-3 years...Going to get a great chance at UC...

Not a great class, but a descent one. A lot of speed on offense and DB, beat weak on both sides of the line and at QB...If 2008 plays out like 2007, expect a much better class next year...

    GO CATS!

    We Are Family...

    Rodriguez, players: 'We are Family'

None denied departed junior guard Justin Boren his right to his opinion, and all of the players interviewed said they harbored no hard feelings toward the 310-pounder after he left the team. They did, however, insist their own experiences with the new coaching staff have been much different.

"I don't question [our family values]," said redshirt freshman quarterback Steve Threet. "We are a family; we are the Michigan football family. We have signs up in the room that say 'hold the rope.' That's big with us. Everybody on the team, everybody on the coaching staff, hold the rope. It's really about having each other's backs and fighting for each other on and off the field. Everybody in this building is in the family.

"When comments like that are made, you go with what you know and keep working. I know what it's like transferring, and everybody has their reasons. I was questioned for transferring [from Georgia Tech] just like [Boren] was. I'm in no position to talk [about his reasons]."

Former U-M safety Ryan Mundy, a four-year letterman who started at West Virginia in his fifth year, said several weeks ago that the family atmosphere was as prevalent under Rodriguez as it was under Lloyd Carr, insisting Rodriguez and his family would be a great fit in Ann Arbor. Former NFL quarterback Shaun King, Rodriguez's quarterback at Tulane, said it takes time with a new staff, but predicted the bond would eventually become strong.

Redshirt sophomore quarterback David Cone called Boren a friend but respectfully disagreed with his opinion, while walk-on signal caller Nick Sheridan refused to comment beyond an "I don't think so – I'll just leave it at that."

Rodriguez was much more pointed in his response.

"That's ridiculous," he said. "I've been a head coach for 15 years, and this system has been in place. I think we have as close a family unit - coaches, staff members and team - as anybody in the country. Always has been, always will be.

"Family is pretty important to all of us, and any coach would tell you that. You can ask anybody who has played for me for the last 15 years. Don't ask somebody who has left with a different agenda. We don't spend a lot of time on people who don't play for Michigan, but it seems to me the rest of the guys are working extremely hard, holding the rope for each other and seem to be excited about getting better every day. That's what I see."

So far, Boren's comments haven't done anything to hinder recruiting efforts (other than all but assure Boren's younger brother Zach, a multi-position athlete at Pickerington Central, won't be wearing maize and blue). The Wolverines have landed three commitments since last week – two from the state of Ohio in cornerback/safety Justin Turner of Massillon Washington (Rivals.com's No. 42 player) and Youngstown Liberty safety Isaiah Bell, one from Detroit in speedy running back Teric Jones of Cass Tech – and seem to be closing in on a few others. Each has echoed a similar sentiment.

''They remind me of the coaching staff here [at my school],'' Bell said yesterday, commenting on his observations from a practice last week. ''It wasn't just a coaching staff - they work like a family in terms of looking out for each other.''
