    Breakfast Conversation

Wednesday, November 5, 2008, 11:56 PM EST [General]

While my second grader was eating his cereal this morning, he read a headline in the newspaper which stated:  "Obama Elected First Black President."  A look of surprise and confusion came over his face.  "There's never been a black president?" he asked in a tone that indicated he found it very hard to believe.

Who knows, perhaps I might I have thought and said the same thing when I was his age.  However, it seems like we've come a long way.

I enjoyed this Tom Toles editorial cartoon:

    Otter Thoughts

I was finally catching up on some reading, and just saw this gem on FJM about Daugherty's article following the Dunn trade.  Here were a few of my favorite lines:

"I look forward to reading Mr. Daugherty's new book: 'Thousands and Thousands of Delicious Slices of Mouth-Watering Pizza That I've Eaten: I Hate Pizza.'"

The analysis of Daugherty's comment that Dunn "couldn't produce a two out RBI single":

"Obviously the first thing you do after reading something like this is check out Dunn's numbers this year. Find out how many RBI singles he has with RISP and two outs. In the back of your mind, you get greedy. You're hoping for something like 25 singles in 70 such at bats.

But I'll admit when I'm beat (sort of). You know how many singles Dunn has this year with two outs and runners in scoring position?

    One.

    Wa-unnnnnn.

Point: Daugher -- ****ing no! Wait. Let's look at the rest of Dunn's line with 2 outs and RsISP:

    In 37 AB's (pretty small sample, of course): .216 / .453 / .730 (!) (1.183 OPS)
    6 HR, 20 RsBI, 15 R, 13 BB

Dude was pretty ****ing good when it mattered, if you think that's when it mattered. Now, everyone, take a nap.

    And, of course:

"What's that? You think just because Paul Daugherty writes about baseball for a major newspaper, he should have a fundamental understanding of how waiver trades work?"

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Great article by CTR on the Goon Squad.  This quote from Dickerson about the Bats struck me:

"That team is so positive, has such a great energy, we'd win two or three games in a row and if we lost, we'd just shake it off like it was no big deal and we'd go back out and win the next three," Dickerson said. "It's one of those things, that when you get a taste of winning, it's contagious. That team went out there and worked so hard every day, refused to give in and battle every day. It's an outstanding atmosphere to be around that team and that type of chemistry."

Makes you wish that Rick Sweet was the Reds' coach.  Or at least Petey Mac.

Holy crap otter. Those pictures are amazing. TV does no justice to how bad that has been. Be safe.

I don't know what the league average is and I'll see what I can find, but I am sure it ain't at a rate of 165 RBI per 550 AB, which is what I used to represent a "season's" worth of data to normalize the results into something that everyone could relate to. It's amazing to me that a person could hit .217 in that situation and be that highly effective. And I agree that a lot of those BB are due to pitchers not wanting to give him anything to hit in those situations

Hi, Otter! I'll have to look for the definition. It's a formula that takes into account a number of different situations. James also describes it as being "like pornography-you know it when you see it". I can assure you though that it's backed by airtight statistics. I'll see what I can find. I do know James has been somewhat of a skeptic on clutch hitting over the years. He was never a guy who said it didn't exist like some but he pointed out that it was extremely hard to find proof of it's existence on a consistent year to year basis. The only list I know of for this is his "faux award" for Clutch Player of the year where Brad Hawpe won it by a huge margin with 45 "clutch" RBI in 2007. David Ortiz scored highest in 2005 and 2006. I can't remember the 2004 winner. If you really want to get into this, give me your email and I send my raw data and spreadsheet.
