Last night, I had the honor to attend the April 9th Scholarship Fund Dinner honoring Fallen Soldiers in Matt Maupin's name. Shayne Graham was there and I was very impressed in his actions last night. More on him later.
It was a very moving evening. Parents of Fallen soldiers were honored all night. The most moving time was when they showed pictures of the Fallen Soldiers and the Parents in attendance stood when their child's picture was on the screen. The most honorable moment was when Mica, the son of Keith and Carolyn Maupin re-enlisted on stage in front of the thousand or so people in attendance. Watching Caroline Maupin was truly inspiring. She had the look of pride, mixed with sadness. You know she was thinking of her son, Matt as she looked on with pride at Mica.
Bootsie Collins was there, running the live auction. He helped push the bidding up to where someone bought a Brett Farvre autographed jersey for $1500. Then Shayne Graham brought up a worn Jersey donated from him, autographed of course, and he personalized it to the person who bought it. Shayne was really happy that his jersey went for $1600.00 and he matched that! All donations last night went to the Yellow Ribbon Support Center.
But one of the classiest moments was when Shayne Graham joined the 3 Maupins on the stage. He told how inspired he was eating with the Maupins, getting to know them, and listening to their stories of what they have done since Matt's disappearance. Shayne then promised an all-expense paid trip for them to go anywhere in the world. Wow! It was a moving time, the Maupins were surprised and overwhelmed....now that's class!
The Maupins started the Yellow Ribbon Support Center after Matt's capture. They have sent thousands and thousands of packages to our local Soldiers deployed overseas, to remind them we are thinking of them here at home. They've also donated computers for centers in Iraq for Families to talk to each other via the internet. And they have given out countless scholarships to High School Students planning their College Education. They promised their mission will go on.
I have had the opportunity to attend many events in my line of work. I went with my friend, TIM, from KISS 107. You can check out his blog at http://kiss107fm.com/pages/onair_kissMornings.html and will soon be able to catch an interview with Mica Maupin and other segments talking about the event and some other people we met last night.
On a day when the city of Cincinnati honored and buried two special, inspiring Fire-Fighters, we sat in this large room honoring all of these Fallen Soldiers. Men and Women who died far from home, away from their families, but not in spirit.
You can't tell me we don't have heroes in our lives. It doesn't take long to find them.
WE WILL NEVER FORGET!
