    Where Was I on Friday...

I was at the Animal Friends Humane Society in Trenton Ohio to volunteer for my Spirit Day. Here at the station we get one day off a year to go help someone who needs it.  I decided to go with two of my coworkers to help out those who may need it the most, the animals at the Animal Friends Humane Society in Trenton. I've never been to an animal shelter before in person. My family adopted two wiener dogs from rescue organizations, but I've never seen what it's like at one of these places first hand. I knew it would be hard, and people who know me well told me not to go, but I did, and I'm glad.

At the risk of sounding really mushy, it was a pretty life changing day. We arrived at the shelter in the morning and set of to walk the dogs. We would each pick a dog in the shelter and get him or her out for some exercise in the back yard or the nature trail. I walked a few restless younger dogs around the walking trail, and man  were they grateful to be outside in the fresh air. About the third or fourth trip inside to get a new dog to walk, I passed by a tiny little terrier mix that I had passed up every other time for the simple fact that he was so small I didn't see him. I grabbed him out of his cage and immediately noticed that he had to be one of the oldest dogs in the shelter. He couldn't weigh more than six or seven pounds. I carried him out in the back yard to go for a walk. Well, he didn't walk far because he had some problems with his back legs, probably arthritis. He was happy to just hang out by the picnic bench. He wimpered a little and looked up at me. I picked him up and sat down with him on the bench. That was when I completely melted.

I spent all day with Lewis. In the picture above we're at the set of the Extreme Makeover Home Edition! We took the dogs out to get them some exposure with the public. It didn't last long, we got kicked out...  No dogs allowed. It was a great chance to get the dogs out of the shelter for a while.

Moral of the story. The little guy I'm holding in all these pictures needs a home. Bad. He is an older terrier mix with a bit of arthritis in his hind legs, but other than that he's in good health. He's so friendly, he just wants to be held and given some attention. He's great at riding in the car. He's quiet. He's wonderful. All the dogs at the shelter are, they'd make a great addition to any family.  I would love to take Lewis myself, but my apartment people think otherwise.

He would make a great dog for anyone who just wants someone to hang out with. He's small, quiet, and his poop couldn't be any bigger than a golf ball... What more could you want in a pet? Think about it, then contact the Animal Friends Humane Society.

Who else is almost as cute as Lewis?  Josh Hamilton! Did you see him last night? If you haven't then I'm sure you've heard. That's enough for tonight. I'm going to go catch up on the All Star Game... Okay... Maybe some Deadliest Catch...
