Weekend's over, and none to soon for the Reds. How the hell do you get swept by the Pirates?!?! Just ask the Reds' offense, and they'll tell ya leaveing over 30 men on base for the series is a good start to such an accomplishment. Leaving that many runners on base without manufacturing runs is pathetic in every way, and Dusty needs to do something to reverse this trend of not getting runs with men in scoring position. I've officially had it with Edwin Encarnacion playing 3B and making throwing errors. He is a cancer to this organization and needs to be cut as soon as they find a replacement, which (unfortunately) probably won't be until we get closer to July 31. Cueto was roughed up, to say the least, on sunday. He's 22 and has made 3 big league starts, so I'm not gonna get to worried over that outing. If he gives up a lot of runs in his next few starts, then I'll start getting nervous.
....And the Green Jacket goes to....Trevor Immelman?? As expected, scores balooned sunday as the wind, which was almost non existant on saturday, picked up dramatically for the final round. Only 2 men shot under 70 on sunday, and only one, Miguel Angel Jimenez, finished near the top (tied for eighth). Immelman shot a three over 75 to finish at -8 for the Masters, holding off Tiger Woods and his final round even par 72 to win his first major championship by 3 strokes. Union, Kentucky's own Steve Flesch struggled with a 6 over 78, but still managed a tie for fifth place with two time Masters winner Phil Mickelson and defending British Open champion Padrig Harrington. As for defending Masters Champion Zach Johnson, he shot a five over 77 to fall to +3 for the tourney, well out of contention. Congrats to Trevor Immelman on his first Green Jacket!! Some notables that missed the cut include Fred Couples (missed his first cut ever at Augusta, leaving him in a tie with Gary Player with 23 straight made cuts in the Masters), Sergio Garcia, Ernie Els, Woody Austin, and Gary Player, who was playing in his 51st Masters.
With last night's 8-5 victory over the dreaded NY Yankees, the Boston Red Sox are now just a half game out of first place in the AL East, trailing Baltimore and Toronto. Yes, I said Baltimore and Toronto are in a tie for the AL East lead after two weeks of play. And that's not even the big surprise in the AL standings. The Detroit Tigers, American League Champions of two years ago, after spending over $40 Million over this past off season, are 2-10, having been outscored a whopping 33-78. Futility at it's finest on display over the weekend with back to back shutout losses for the Tigers against the White Sox. WAKE UP TIGERS!!!! And Congratulations to Greg Maddux on picking up win #349 yesterday. Greg is retiring after this year, and, personally, I would like nothing more than to see him leave the game he loves with another World Series ring. Just as long as he doesn't have to beat the Red Sox to get it....
Jimmie Johnson and Chad Knaus are officially my new stock brokers. A late gamble on fuel payed off for the two time defending NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion as he went on to win the Subway Fresh Fit 500 at Phoenix. The rest of the top 5 didn't seem willing to chance it, as they decided to pit for a splash and go in the final 15 laps of the race, giving Johnson the lead with 4 laps to go. It payed off, as Johnson took the checkered flag for his first win of 2008, as well as Hendrick Motorsports' first win of 2008. Points leader Jeff Burton finished 6th, while Dale Junior finished 7th, allowing him to jump to 3rd place in the points standings. Jeff Gordon remains out of the Top 12, finishing 13th in the race and being in the same position in points.
And, with great sadness, I am here to announce the death of the Supersonics playing in Seattle. With one last hurrah, a 99-95 upset of the Mavericks, the Sonics look destined to leave Key Arena to play in Oklahoma City next year, fleeing a, to sum it up politely, less than friendly relationship with the city of Seattle. Some fans are still holding out hope for the Sonics returning to Seattle next year, but it may be for not. Hopefully, things will be better for the Supersonics in their new home next year.
