The Big Red Machine

    GM for the day

Ok today I get to play GM for the Reds.  Given the current state of the team, I think the following moves should be made and soon.

    1. Offer Ken Griffey Jr. to Cleveland, Tampa Bay, both NY teams and Seattle.  The asking price--two low-minor leaguers.  The goal is to unload the contract, not to ask for the moon because we aren't going to get jack in return.  The allure to Griffey is to go to a contender (less Seattle), or to the place he once played.  Tampa is a contender and Griffey could be very close to home and give it a whirl with an up and coming team.

    2. Offer Adam Dunn to the 10 teams on his trade list and see who offers the best deal.  Again, the objective is not to ask for the moon, but to unload his contract while he is red hot at the plate.  His stock will likely not get any higher than right now. (or June 15th when we can trade him).

    3. Get an MRI done on Homer Bailey's shoulder.  Something is not right with him.

    4. Immediately call up Jay Bruce and release Corey Patterson.

    5. Release Josh Fogg and move Matt Belisle to the bullpen and call up Matt Maloney from AAA to take a stab at the fifth starter position.

    6. Release Javier Valentine and call up Andy Phillips (1B right handed) from AAA.

Hell of a plan...and while I look at other MLB teams making all sorts of moves and call-ups and such, the Reds continue to plod along with the same BS. What in the hell is Jocketty and Dusty looking at on that field every night? Can they see something you can't? I almost give up, I was hoping to see Bruce up, but apparently Dusty feels Patterson is better than Bruce...send Patterson to AAA and I bet he still wouldn't bust a grape.

Interesting thought on Bailey. If he's not hurt though, I'm not sure he'll ever crack the starting five for the Reds.

The only change I'd make is to not release Corey. you just got rid of all three starting outfielders and only brought one into the club. Keep Corey, bat him seventh or eight and put Jay in right field.

The only one I'm not too sure about is bringing up Phillips. I'd like to see Votto get as many AB's as possible. Everything else is dead on!

No need to unload either Griffey or Dunn's contract since both expire at the end of the year. There's an option for Jr., just don't execute it. I agree you won't get a whole lot for Jr. Dunn is another story but the fact that his contract expires makes his value limited though he is hot. The other problem you have is that if you get rid of both now, you have two big holes in the outfield. Assuming you bring up Jay Bruce, you're trusting the outfield to other guys in the minors that are not major league ready. Bailey's problem is that he crusied through the lower minors with his fastball. He needs to pitch not just throw. Movement, location, change of speed are what gets guys out in the show. There's value to Fogg as a starting pitcher, so instead of eating his contract, trade him. You won't get a lot for him but anything is better than nothing. Matt Maloney's numbers right now are nothing to write home about. His era is 4.91 and they're batting .277 against him. Andy Phillips is 31, that's not the youth movement that people who want to blow up the team want. The best thing to do to bring up Bruce and allow Dusty to keep his boy Patterson, is to trade Scott Hatteberg for whatever you can get for him. Javier Valentin can back up Votto at first. (He did it last week.) Valentin also is a pretty good pinch hitter, a skill that's hard to do.
