Cincinnati Overreacts to the Dunn Trade

Monday, August 11, 2008, 07:01 PM EST [General]

Adam Dunn was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks today, ending yet another tumultous fan/player marriage in the Queen City. I hit the streets to gauge the fan reaction:

"Adam Dunn is a waste of a baseball uniform. Sure he hits a few home runs now and again, but he doesn't hustle. You can't win a baseball game without hustling. Look at how he slides into a base...he just flops. Pete Rose dove 8 feet into the air. All he did was get more base hits than anyone in the history of ever. That's what a great player does."

    Charles Guthrie (Avondale)

"With Dunn finally gone, the winning can commence. Well, not quite. We have to get rid of Brandon Phillips first. He didn't run out a grounder once. He also poses when he makes contact. I don't like that. The Big Red Machine never would have done that, and they won a lot of games.

    Mark Stevens (West Chester)

"All Adam Dunn can do is hit solo home runs. We need someone who can get a single now and then, so the other guys can drive in runs. Chris Welsh said that solo home runs are rally killers. I believe him."

    Andy Thomas (Clifton)

"I can't believe the Reds traded Adam Dunn. How tragic. They'll never find someone to match his VORP output. This team stinks and will never win. I'm a Cardinals fan now, since they were smart enough to fire this hack, Walt Jocketty."

    Randy Van Der Veen (Ameila)

    "I played the game."

    Tracy Jones (his own world)

A person is smart. People are dumb.

Cincy fans and media, I have some bad news for you. You may want to sit down. Ready?

Chad Johnson is smarter than you. He just is. Reasonable people cannot disagree on that point.

Nacho Cheeso shows up to mandatory mini-camp, mails in a few drills, and sits back down. His leach, I mean agent, pops his face out. An ESPN crew of NINE is ready and willing to give him a mani/pedi so they can get just one quote. After practice, nothing substantial was said. By anyone.

But "we" immediately turn to the coach. His quote is the gospel. He basically said the team was moving forward with or without Chad on the field, but somehow failed. Wait, what?

Someone clearly needs to fill me in, because I'm missing something. Was I supposed to be expecting Marvin to lambaste Chad in his presser? Was Chad supposed to be the focus? I thought he wasn't.  My eyes are bleeding.

Chad Johnson showed up to mini-camp, as per the rules. The rules don't state he has to practice full tilt. He just has to be there. Originally he wasn't going to be there, and that was wrong. He's there. But that's wrong. And somehow it's Marvin's fault. My nose just fell off.

I don't get this town. "We" go out of our way to bash anything and everything, facts and logic be damned. It's the coach's fault. The GM's fault. The owner sucks. I stubbed my toe.

Take a step back and see things the way they are. Chad is here because he has to be here. Marvin lets him on the field because he has to let him on the field. None of this is surprising, or really news at all. But it's all anyone wants to talk about. But talking about it is bad.

The problem in this equation isn't Marvin, Chad, Drew, or Mike. It's you.

    Hello You People

Sunday, April 20, 2008, 02:28 AM EST [General]

Hello all, my name is Adam. I think things and then want to share them. I will do that here, because I can. Big whoop, wanna fight about it?

Anyway, I will talk mostly about the Reds, Bengals, and the Dayton Flyers basketball team. I will also go on rants about anything and everything. My rants are allergic to facts and logic, so let that be a warning.

    Till next time...
