i'm just spit-balling here, but let me know what you think...first off some in season moves, trade any of the vets you can, ie Weathers, Ross, Lincoln, Fogg, Affeld and get what you can, low A arms or AA position players...next call Texas and work a deal for Laird or Salty...obviously Salty is gonna cost, but if you can make it happen and not blow the farm system up get him...if not grab Laird, solid behind the plate with a better than average stick...limp to the finish line and try not to blow up the young arms...in the offseason say goodbye to Dunn and Griffy and open up some huge cash...make the decision early to move Votto to Left, EE to right so they can work on it this offseason...and the big move do WHATEVER it takes to get Teixeira when his contract is up...he's a Boras client so it's gonna be about the money, but just bite down and pay it...fill in a few gaps in the bullpen and re-sign Hairston and this is what the line up and staff looks like...
SS-Hairston
3B-Kepp
CF-Bruce
1B-Tex
2B-Phillips
LF-Votto
RF-EE
C-Salty/Laird
Rotation options: Harang, Volquez, Arroyo, Cueto, Bailey, Thompson, Livingston
Bullpen: Burton and Bray setting up for Cordero with assorted other arms...
the thinking here is that while you don't have a legit 40HR guy you have a collection of 20-30HR guys, a proven RBI guy in the middle with Tex, guys who all hit for a decent average, handle the bats well, run okay and don't SO a ton...play a little Angels baseball, take the extra base, move guys over play fundimental baseball...pitch it and catch it and see what happen...the obvious weekness is going to be corner outfield defense but isn't it??? so let me know what you think...and if Walt reads this feel free to email me and we can talk...hahahahaha!
